What are the most sustainable and environmentally friendly ways to improve transportation infrastructure?

There are various effective ways to enhance transportation infrastructure while also being mindful of the environment. Some key approaches include: prioritizing investments in public transit systems, advocating for the adoption of electric vehicles and other eco-friendly fuels, implementing infrastructure to support walking and biking, incorporating green landscaping and infrastructure to mitigate the impact of roads and highways, and utilizing sustainable design and construction methods for new transportation projects.

Enhancing the user experience across all modes of transport! By focusing on improving the ease and enjoyment of using public transport, walking, and cycling, individuals may be more inclined to opt for these eco-friendly alternatives over private cars. Moreover, raising awareness about the associated costs and health benefits of non-motorized modes like walking and cycling can further incentivize their adoption.

Reducing car dependency must go hand-in-hand with improving the accessibility to various modes of public transport as well as with well planned and balanced life-work-recreation infrastructure.

Reducing car dependency is holistically sustainable: Environmentally as it lowers emissions not only at point of use but the entire chain from resource extraction to manufacturing. Economically as it puts money back in people's pockets and then can be spent locally, keeping money in the community. And Socially as it naturally introduces human to human interaction in the public realm through people using active and public transportation.

I have been an active transport traveller all my life, primarily by bicycle, and use public transport as my preferred second option. Both these modes have the triple advantages of providing deeper and more rapid cuts to emissions, reducing traffic congestion and promoting transport equality. Approximately one third of the population can't travel by car, either because they can't drive (due to age, disability or disqualification) or because they can't afford it and exclusively car centric transport excludes them. For active transport to succeed we need high quality, protected infrastructure - otherwise people feel (and are) unsafe and will not use it.

Motivation is a crucial factor in achieving awareness. Active and public transportation can help individuals save money and improve their health while also benefiting the government by encouraging investment in sustainable mobility infrastructure.

From an urban design perspective, promoting active and public transport creates environments encouraging movement and connectivity. Designing pedestrian-friendly streetscapes and transit-oriented developments fosters healthier, more inclusive communities while reducing environmental impact.

Public transit is a civic utility. Economical, reliable and great transit is a vehicle for sustainable city living — not an end unto itself. Sustainable mobility meets collective needs, spurs smart choices, induces desired collective behaviors and fuels our democracy— all of this promotes sustainable and equitable urban life. Need to keep the big picture in mind!

Stop thinking of the car as the primary mode of movement. Emphasis friendly pedestrian and bicycle links between homes and destinations. First, all school children should be able to safely bike or walk to school. They should be able to continue that pattern through out there lives with easy , enjoyable trips to the market, the park, etc. ( especially now that e-bikes allow greater distances ). Then nature, wellness and even social engagement become a part of daily life. Less health care costs , less environmental damage, fewer accidents , cheaper to build an maintain then a bloated road system. A win-win . Only the USA relies so heavily on the car. It will take the will and the resources but the ultimate benefits are there.

Transportation investments are a response to land use plain and plain and simple. We can reduce car use and green house gases (GHG) with mixed use walkable places. The research is clear. Compared to conventional development patterns transit oriented communities (TOCs) produce 50% fewer car trips, in part because TOC residents are 5 times more likely to use transit. TOCs emit 78% less GHG and use 50% less energy. And they they have 25% lower costs for roads, water and sewers. To borrow from a political line - ‘it’s the land use stupid.’ Remember that and you are well on the way to an effective integrated transportation strategy.

Utilize renewable and recyclable materials, optimize maintenance through digital technologies, and ensure flexibility to adapt to changing demands. Encourage greener choices through positive experiences and motivation, as well as designing resilient and inclusive systems.

Sustainability isn't solely achieved through regulations but also through motivating individuals to make greener choices. Motivation can be a result of positive experiences. Regarding the perception of the journey experience, people's engagement in promoting sustainable mobility can have a significant impact.

Lagos needs green and efficient transport solutions. The state government has launched light rail systems to reduce traffic and pollution. They have also planned to introduce standard passenger ferries, which will use the city's waterways to ease road congestion and promote cleaner modes of transport. These ferries are indigenously built by local boat builders, showcasing the talent and innovation of Lagosians. They are also designed to meet high standards of safety, quality, and performance, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride for commuters. These initiatives show Lagos' commitment to a sustainable and resilient transport future.
