What is IT operations management and why is it important?

IT operations management involves overseeing and managing the day-to-day activities and processes related to an organization's IT infrastructure, systems, and services. This includes monitoring system performance, troubleshooting technical issues, managing IT assets, and implementing changes and upgrades to IT systems. ITOM's objective is to manage IT requirements within an organization With particular focus on overseeing the provisioning, capacity, performance, and availability of IT services and resources. Aside from focus on established process, an eye on continual improvement for all services and their consumers is key. ITOM is a sub directive of ITSM but holds as equal an importance to those core elements of ITSM.

IT Operations Management I like to define it as the heart of daily IT task we have to do to ensure that there is no disruption to the business we are managing.

How I like to think of ITOM is like an infinite round lifecycle that consists of: - Planning and design: Analyse the business needs, design the architecture of the solution - Implementation: Provisioning of the designed IT infrastructure, software and putting it all together in one architecture. Testing - a lot of testing and then the rollout/live - Monitoring and management: Proactive monitoring, incident handling, performance optimization. - Optimization and improvement: Usage data analysis, process optimization and automation, change management. - Decomissioning (optional): If the solution is no longer needed then graceful decomissioning. Impact analysis, business processes audit and data retention and archiving are to be considered.

When there is Cost increase , some management will stop investing on the IT improvement. They don't see the return of Investment clearly. This is sad. IT operations management must be up to date and cannot be put on hold due to cost reasons.

I believe that effective ITOM is essential for organisations to maintain a stable and effective IT operation, to provide data security, integrity and a seamless experience to end users and external customers. It helps align overall IT services with operation needs, enabling them to achieve changing the IT technology while reducing the risks and operation costs.

IT operations must align itself to organisational targets. Many a times IT ops teams are left to take the blame of incrased costs and ops managers fail to showcase their contributions to business success as they are focused on solving day to day problems. Company management must realise that organisation will not survive without a good ops team and they must support plans and efforts. In return, ops managers must make sure that they align their roadmap with value proposition and control costs.

In other words, an ITOM is responsible for enforcing business strategies through the appropriate technology.

Reporting to the IT director or CIO, you lead a team of specialists. I have already had projects where the operations manager had several years of experience in his job, but unfortunately he had never made the effort to understand and learn the special features of his current position. In such cases, a plant manager unfortunately contributes more to the problems than to the solutions. Such people also have to keep themselves up to date and ensure that their employees keep their knowledge up to date.

A clearly defined IT Operations Manager role is counter intuitive. It is in my opinion (as previous ITOM supporting 100+ facilities) that an ITOM must own all technology under the sun: GPS fleet tracking, biometric access controls, ERP deployment, IT Service Desk, Operation Technology & IoT i4.0, IT Policies, cybersecurity, IT budget forecast, data center ops, operational efficiency driven by focused improvement technology projects. An ITOM must also have business acumen, it's more than just understanding technology. While aligning with business needs is the norm for IT Professionals, an ITOM must lead cost reduction and operational growth, driving business enhancement & transformation, rather than settle in a support position.

Its helpful if the team has a clear Job Scope defined. The person should be trained or already have the experience in the specialized field.

An IT ops team, guided by a manager, ensures smooth IT functions. From installation to incident response, they maintain systems in line with policies, ensuring reliability and security. Collaboration is key for seamless integration with other teams.
