When it comes to scope definition, most people will be tempted to jump into the analysis and defining the details right away. From my experience, there are two important areas to address (or skills to develop) for a successful outcome: 1. Clear Objectives: Develop the ability to define clear and precise project objectives and deliverables. 2. Scope Containment: Learn to manage and contain project scope to prevent scope creep, which can lead to project overruns.

The scope of a project often depends on the plan. There is some coordination with the business partners, but we have to pass the proposal. Teams must define number issues, budgets, plans, deadlines, etc. The project manager coordinates schedule adjustments between engineers and business partners.

Take the time to speak to the relevant stakeholders about what they want from a demand or project before committing resources. Often Security is told that the business wants a particular product but until you understand why you would be able to accurately define the scope of the project. Example being that the product may need significant time post deployment to achieve the desired outcome.

Enhancing time management skills is a critical project management skill that directly contributes to success in cybersecurity. The dynamic nature of cybersecurity projects often involves handling multiple tasks concurrently, from vulnerability assessments to incident response. Effective time management ensures that tasks are prioritized, deadlines are met, and resources are allocated efficiently. It's good if things go according to plan, but things may not go as planned due to incidents or accidents. The project manager will negotiate and make adjustments, including deadline extensions.

From my experience, what works best is to combine time management skills with energy management skills. Everyone has the same hours in a day, and the same days in the week. But how much progress you achieve in those same time frames is different, because of energy management skills. For example, when managing projects you are likely inclined to multi-task and manage several dependencies or issues at the same time. On a superficial level it seems you are saving time, but beneath the surface you are depleting your energy levels. Multitasking can be harmful for our focus levels and there is lots of neuroscientific research that demonstrates that switching between brain regions requires significant mental energy.

An engineer with Six Sigma knowledge and experience should be assigned to the task. We have engineers with a wide range of knowledge, from executive to six sigma green belt knowledge, so we need to have them conduct quality control tests.

In additional to quality management processes and tools, make sure you communicate with your project stakeholders and get their feedback on the project deliverables. If you measure quality only by technical benchmarks, you may comply to industry standards but you won't gain or maintain your stakeholder's trust and confidence.

Project managers are required to identify risks. It is necessary to predict and plan in advance risks such as budget, deadline, cost, and risk avoidance. This should be considered during the initial planning stage.

Risk management is an iterative and an integral part of the all project activities. Right from the project initiation phase till the completion of the project, risks will manifest across domains which may or may not be within your control. The risk management strategies such as Accepting the risk, Transferring the risk, Mitigating the risk and Avoiding the risks should be used to ensure the risks are within the “risk tolerance of the business”. Ensure the management with the appropriate authority signs off on the residual risk.

As a project manager you are required to evaluate risks and prioritize which of them requires fixing to ensure the project remains on track. This is an invaluable skill in cybersecurity. Managing expectations with stakeholders is extremely important. One thing I think of regarding this topic is 'breadcrumbs' in keeping people in the loop of a project. If we drop some breadcrumbs during important phases of the project, they will know we're keeping them updated and if anything were to go sideways, it won't be as big of a blow.
