I can't stress it enough that Telecommunication Engineering is not independent from the Euipment it connects, that may be a totally different Engineering field with specific requirements for the telecommunication systems that is connected their equipment. Simple example is I am in Signalling Engineering, where a lot of the Safety Critical is communicating via Fail Safe Data Transmission systems FSDTs, with messages relative small amount of safety critical data but big overheads (encription) to ensure the systems safety (SIL4). When the telecommunication system applies reliability systems: Error correction, retraining, compression, etc.. This can cause dangerous situations. Rather send no messages than a faulty one. Systems failsafe state.
