What are some common insider threats and how can you use network monitoring tools to identify them?

Insider threats, especially malicious insider exploitation, can, in my opinion, be mitigated by strong data/information governance and protection standards. When an organization's data and information are appropriately classified and policies for their management are developed, the appropriate protection can be implemented. Security professionals can use tools like SIEM, SOAR, CASB, IDS, and DLP to monitor insider activity (User and Entity Behaviour Analytics - UEBA), detect malicious behaviour, lateral movement, or data exfiltration, and then trigger and/or automate responses to prevent the malicious activity from occurring. Management should also be able to recognise disgruntled employees who may be motivated to harm the company.

Defend against malicious insiders: Employ network monitoring tools, track user activity, and set up alerts for unusual patterns, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures.

This is the best justification for a zero-trust mindset, dealing with threats as necessary while allowing us to give people the benefit of the doubt. Only after a complete investigation can we know if it was an insider and if the insider acted maliciously or was compromised (this includes determining if the insider was careless).

A thorough understanding of the organization's asset inventory and/or asset/configuration management database (CMDB - at the heart of cybersecurity) that is integrated with cyber security asset management enables security operations teams to proactively identify and respond to security incidents involving rogue devices. A CSAM can assist in the identification of unauthorised devices, vulnerabilities in assets connected to it, security and network monitoring, policy enforcement (automatic reactions), and thus the proactive implementation of a risk-based security approach.
