What on earth is Servant Leadership? This alone sets me alight. The word servant should never be used in Leadership - goodness me. But I do agree, creating a common vision which is visionary in that is sets out the look & feel and the fruits of your labour. This needs to light a spark in people rather than outside.

From this point, by supporting and empowering your people and helping them explore their ideas, the creativity comes from this foundation. As a method to encourage our team to define problems and own solutions, I created an "IT Think Tank" program (modeled after 'Shark Tank') which encouraged our team members to find solutions to problems and present them to a group of IT and business leaders. For those proposals where it made sense, we would empower the requester with funding and support to create a 'proof of concept,' or if the idea was already proven, we would add it to our backlog and proceed. Leveraging the team members unique talents and experiences, putting the initiative in their hands, and providing them the support needed to see it through was key in changing the culture and sense of self-worth for our team.

There are no fixed, formal guidelines on how to achieve autonomy and ownership, no cake recipe for how to overcome the challenges of group work and generate motivation so that they achieve job satisfaction, so that with good organizational behavior practice, individuals can cope well with the pressure of the task and overcome the variety of challenges. Inspiring them to learn selected high-performance behaviors helps individuals create self-awareness. With the right guidance, millennials will be able to design and execute their own action plan, recognizing their current position, its impact on the group, its implications for team harmony and the frequency of results

Recognize and celebrate not only the big successes but also the small wins and learning moments. Acknowledging these smaller achievements and the lessons learned along the way reinforces a culture of continuous improvement and creativity!

In my experience, nurturing and developing creativity is a cognitive skill within the reach of individuals. For this, one must cultivate a keen sense of observation and curiosity and ask questions intending to learn. A leader holds the power to foster an environment and culture conducive to creativity, but inspiring everyone to embrace it remains a challenge. The spark of creativity often ignites when the stakes are high, and survival is on the line. Servant leadership can play a role in laying the groundwork for a culture of creativity and innovation. However, the actual transformation occurs when all facets, processes, and structures of organizations and teams are harmonized to cultivate creativity.

Support encompasses offering guidance, feedback, coaching, and recognition. It also entails creating a safe and positive environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas, opinions, and concerns. By offering support, you empower your team to overcome challenges, enhance their performance, and achieve their goals. In addition to support, providing resources is crucial. This includes equipping your team with the necessary tools, equipment, information, and time to perform their work effectively and efficiently. By ensuring that your team has the resources they need, you demonstrate your commitment to their success and well-being.

Creating and ensuring safe and positive environment has crucial impact here. Some employees might have fear asking for a support or help - as in some cultures it might be interpreted as being less competent. Thus, the leaders have to create and ensure safe environment where everybody can ask for help, support, or an input without being judged.

Soliciting, valuing & actively acknowledging input from your team members are very important. This engages your team members & would help foster cooperation and genuine care for the company. If one truly believes that the company cares for them, they will also value the company in return. In the area of creativity, I believe one can be more creative when he/she is comfortable in the environment he/she is in. In order to create such an environment, a leader must show respect, humility & confidence towards the team. The team should be able to feel free to speak their minds without fear of judgement & feel free in providing constructive criticisms & opinions without fear of retaliation, as in order to improve, a team needs a balance of both.

Acknowledge the advice and input and, more importantly, share the positive outcomes or lessons as a direct result from their input. This, when done at scale, can have a positive impact on workforce culture and really create a sense of safety in the workplace.

I call this an exchange. It is a worldly known fact that together, the bridges are built better. Soliciting and valuing individuals and ideas lead to openness to experience, leading to more participation and teamwork. Clearly, the energy levels are high when you know you feel belonged in a workplace or any other environment. Appreciating, listening to new ideas, brainstorming, non judgmental approach towards finding solutions, respecting uniqueness in each and encouraging inclusion are doable approaches and they definitely add on to creative quotient and progress.

Rewarding creativity can be meaningful without extravagant gestures. In my experience, personalized thank-you notes expressing gratitude for creative contributions have been highly effective. We initiated a program where leaders personally write notes to celebrate employees. This personalized recognition approach has proven to be quite impactful.

Incentive systems block creativity and personal responsibility. In my environment, I see employees who submit ideas in order to get money for them (as a reward). If they don't get anything, they are disappointed and don't submit any more ideas. Having creative ideas because of a reward is the wrong way for me. It is much more about the inner motivation to strengthen a contribution to the success of the company, to the design of one's own workplace. That promotes creative ideas. Recognition and reward are then the resources to be able to work on the idea or even to be named "idea generator of the month".

One of my most successful programs deployed in my career are reward and recognition sparking creativity. It created a ripple effect in the organization during its early days post deployment. A simple certificate to appreciate some one's good work is better than encouraging words only. Every organization must have simple reward schemes besides the complex ones.

Formal recognition of achievements through lettere, certificates, company awards, and similar methods can boost creativity as well.

Opportunities. I firmly believe in providing relevant opportunities to people in the team based on their strengths and then letting them excel based on their creativity and excellence. There will be many more celebratory moments when the team is given opportunities, the right ones. Building a supportive environment, constructive feedback, appreciating actions, efforts and providing opportunities may foster individual and team progress.

Understand the existing power dynamics within your group or organization. I’ve seen creativity killed because the influencer of the group couldn’t open their minds to new possibilities. Without critical buy-in, any creative exercise will come off as performative or another lame “team building thing”. Before rolling out workshops, resources, etc to the large group meet 1on1 with the influencer. Involve them in the process and allow them to have say in the how and why. This clears the path for mass adoption. Additionally, modeling means showing the team it’s ok to fail. Your reaction to a bad idea signals to the team whether or not it’s safe to take risks. Set parameters on ‘acceptable failure’ and reframe failure as part of the process.

Show some models of creativity to your team by visiting organizations that have successful stories about creativity to tell. We don't always have to try to show everything through ourselves as leaders. We can use already available "assets" within other organizations and inspiring people.

Withhold judgment and resist the urge to solve the problem for your employees. Have the patience to let them work through it and you will notice innovation. Believe in their ability to solution and guide them on how to think about the problem by asking questions to encourage deeper thinking. Redirect as needed to keep the flow of the strategy on track but don’t offer all the answers. Your team is likely brilliant and will surprise you with what they come up with. It may be even better than your original idea.

One cannot be pressured to be creative. Promoting, encouraging creativity is different than compelling people tip to toe to deliver creatively. One way to emphasize growth and creativity is to function as a team, and respect individuals as unique contributors. With which, individual performance will be heightened and group progress will elevate.

Encourage individuals to seek external perspectives and resources. Often individuals find themselves surrounded by the same creative angles and not paying attention to industry evolving trends. By providing a space where leaders meet with different layers of the organization to encourage participation in creative discussions, members feel empowered and responsible to bring their own contribution to the creative process within an organization.

I’m not sure that it has to do with being a servant leader but implementing design thinking principles and practices can be one way to foster creativity. Considering we are talking about the workplace, it’s a great approach to take to help people become better, more creative problem solvers.

Encourage autonomy, letting individuals explore diverse solutions. Lead by example, demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt. By prioritizing the team's needs and providing a supportive environment, servant leadership becomes a catalyst for unleashing the full creative potential within your organization.

I think all of these suggestions and recommendations are great, except it’s missing some vital pieces. Personal development and soft skills are so important! It should be consistently encouraged, rewarded and modeled from the top down. Emotional intelligence on display day in and day out! It’s often easily overlooked, but can strengthen all of the other recommendations tremendously!

I believe that “over working” ourselves and our teams can be one of the most dangerous practices with respect to creativity. The bill drive by Daniel Pink highlights that fit simple or mundane tasks overworking an unmotivated team has some detrimental effect. However as the tasks become more intricate or complicated the need to manage work burnout and find intrinsic motivation becomes much more important. Challenging problems often require creative solutions, that creativity needs space to breathe. Burnout and creativity seldom coexist.
