What are some effective strategies to recruit diverse volunteers for your non-profit organization?

In my role as Trustee we often look to recruit diverse volunteers at Stallcombe House. You should look to identify where your current team lacks variety in skills and backgrounds. Reach out to various community groups, and use inclusive language in your communications to attract a wide range of volunteers. Encourage existing volunteers to tap into their diverse networks. Offer flexible roles to accommodate different lifestyles and commitments. Regular feedback from volunteers can guide adjustments to your approach, ensuring everyone feels valued and included, enhancing the diversity and effectiveness of your team.

RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS By my experience as a Christian leader, first, not all volunteers are helpers from the heart without the Holy Spirit's HELP as we will soon see here. Many become good volunteers after they are taught and they know the leader and the vision. Why? The vision can enlighten, impact, motivate, and strengthen their hearts with LOVE, Peace, and Joy. Secondly, when leaders hear the 'word' VOLUNTEER, the mind quickly latches on the idea of free service and the best way to use such service without having to go extra miles to know volunteers personally,to make sure these people are our family and friends; not only to be used to achieve our objectives to hit the targets.

As a Trustee at Stallcombe House, I've learnt effective strategies for attracting diverse volunteers. First, collaborate with organisations representing different communities to widen your reach. Secondly, utilise diverse communication channels like social media and online forums. Lastly, hosting or participating in events and workshops showcases your charity's impact, attracting a broad audience. These steps have significantly improved volunteer diversity in our organisation

Whatever you do be intentional and not Performative. Seeking individuals who align with the mission of your organization, have the culture capital, and the passion for the work.

Although it is my choice of having to recruit people from different backgrounds, languages, skills, and levels in GGM; still, as important as this is, I will not leave out the Biblical principle, as a minister because this always works, helps, and profitable to the leader and the organisation in the end, whether the role is short-term or long-term. Many Bible leaders had VOLUNTEERS assigned to them and they LOVED the leaders they served under and stayed with them to the end with loyal hearts. In all our pursuits we must always remember to introduce LOVE and LOYALTY. There's no hope for good success without these two.

This could be learning new skills, gaining experience, or contributing to a cause they are passionate about. Sharing stories and testimonials from current volunteers effectively illustrates these benefits and values, making volunteering an enriching experience. This approach resonates well with potential volunteers, aligning with their values and beliefs, thereby fostering a diverse and engaged volunteer base

In my experience as a Trustee at Stallcombe House, offering flexible and accessible volunteering opportunities is vital. We address time and resource constraints by providing diverse roles—short-term, long-term, virtual, or on-site. Tailoring to volunteers' schedules and preferences, like evening or weekend options, increases participation. Ensuring accessibility for all abilities, languages, and backgrounds is also key. This includes offering necessary training, support, or accommodations. Such flexibility not only broadens volunteer inclusion but also enriches our organisation with diverse skills and perspectives.

Be sure that the composition of your Board of Trustees reflects diversity to ensure that strategic decisions include the voices of underrepresented populations. Clearly communicate--internally and externally--that diversity is a priority. Create the infrastructure that supports diversity. This might include the establishment of a Diversity Committee for your Trustees, the collection and analysis of diversity-related data, and the simple representation of diverse populations by the display of art and images in the facility.

Typically, there’s not always an abundance of diverse perspectives, languages and (lived) experiences to help inform an organization of gaps, barriers and challenges the community faces. We tend to convene stakeholders that can provide resources, capital and expertise to take part in system change work. However, many organizations forget to incorporate the same approach to the external community—those who are the customers of the nonprofit organization and system that they’re trying to change. Therefore, it is imperative that we reach out to and connect with those who aren’t paid employers of the organizations or partners to provide them with a platform, voice and seat at the table to be apart of the systemic change that’s taking place.

At Stallcombe House, cultivating a diverse and inclusive culture is crucial for recruiting volunteers. We focus on creating a welcoming environment where volunteers feel valued and appreciated. Fostering a sense of belonging and community is key. Celebrating the diversity and contributions of our volunteers, through sharing their stories and achievements, is a part of our ethos. Actively seeking and acting on volunteer feedback, via surveys and meetings, reinforces this inclusive culture. This approach not only attracts diverse volunteers but also enhances the overall effectiveness and community impact of our organisation.

In my work with a non-profit and in working with leaders at others, the rally call for volunteers must come with three ‘markers’ to drive sustained commitment: (1) Invest in real work that aligns in values to the volunteer community you are seeking to build. Words are simply not enough. Real and specific investment is essential. (2) Create real optionality for volunteers. Some want to have little commitment and others are looking for substantive commitment. Enable many options, making each interesting and viable. Too many organizations have barriers to entry to do the interesting volunteer work. (3) Organize to scale. Enthusiastic volunteers know other potential enthusiastic volunteers. Create incentives for group volunteer work.

Non-profit organizations thrive on the dedication and passion of their volunteers. To fully represent the communities they serve, it is crucial to recruit and retain a diverse volunteer force. Embracing a variety of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds enriches the organization's work, strengthens its ties to the community, and amplifies its impact.

If you can? Pay them. Members of "diverse" communities - be they people of color, working class parents, the LGBTQ+ community, those living with disabilities, or others - are often struggling to keep food on the table and a roof over their head. Part of the reasons they may not volunteer for your organization, even if they want to, are that they might not have the time to (because the economic incentives force them to have a second or third job just to make ends meet!). And many members of these communities are being tired of asked to give that type of support without being able to take care of their own needs. Whether it's a stipend or a wage, if you have the resources to provide volunteers from these communities, you should do it.
