What are some tips to help ESL students improve their writing skills?

In my experience, for ESL students, improving writing skills involves fostering a strong connection between reading and writing. Encouraging extensive reading in the target language exposes students to diverse vocabulary and sentence structures, aiding in their writing development. Children's literature plays a pivotal role in this process. A specific example involves selecting culturally relevant books that resonate with the student's background, helping them relate to characters and storylines. After reading, engaging in discussions and activities that prompt writing, such as summarizing, retelling, or creating alternate endings, maximizes the impact of children's literature in enhancing the writing skills of ESL students.

My experience tells me that the reading sample must engage the curiosity of the student, which requires me to build my own cultural proficiency to ensure that a variety of textual options exists that will encourage the student to engage with a text that is more likely to help them keep reading. Then, conversations about language, tone, and voice become more possible because the student can describe whether it’s a way of telling stories that is familiar to them.

Before becoming a writer, one has to become a reader first. Even before that, an observer. A reader when reads the text may skip a lot of essential details, for example, the basics, the structure, punctuation, breaks, etc. An observer will read the symbols, picture the text and will follow consistency. A writer has to be both the personalities. For the ESL students, reading and observing are essential. It doesn't matter if the text or reading material has to be revisited. The more you revisit and review, the more you are linguistically rich. Also, a good write-up needs the first step to pen down things and gradually work towards perfection.

Any beginning writing needs to be authentic... it needs to mean something to the student, and it needs to be written in their voice, so they read it, make sense of it and correct it. If they hear their voice in the writing, then they will want it to be good.

Reading serves as the foundation of communication, underscoring its undeniable importance. I firmly believe that, for ESL students, cultivating a habit of reading can offer a diverse range of vocabulary. This becomes even more pronounced when students engage with characters and narratives, allowing for exploration across various genres, including fiction, adventure, and even comics. Such diverse reading material enables students to connect better with the content, fostering interest and preventing disengagement from the reading process.

I love this because regular writing practice also fosters creativity and critical thinking. Writing prompts, brainstorming sessions, and freewriting exercises stimulate your imagination and encourage you to think outside the box. Through this ,it then allows you to share your writing with peers, mentors, or online communities which can then provide valuable insights and perspectives that you may not have considered on your own.

From my own experience assisting ESL students, developing a regular writing practice can be key. Often the best prompts are those in which students can connect to their own lives, in turn connecting their language learning to their own personal experiences. Writing about their day to day lives can also help ESL students build academic vocab related to school, friends, and their environment which will encourage them to speak/use the language beyond the classroom too. These short journal prompts can be there shared aloud or used as examples to further students language learning.

ESL students greatly benefit from diverse writing opportunities, ranging from crafting journal entries and letters to composing reviews, stories, and reports. These varied forms of writing allow students to not only develop their language skills but also to express themselves creatively and effectively. Moreover, writing for different purposes—whether it be to inform, persuade, entertain, or reflect—fosters critical thinking and language proficiency. Through regular writing practice, students gradually build confidence in their abilities and enhance their fluency, ultimately empowering them to communicate with greater ease and clarity in both academic and everyday contexts.

It is very necessary to do a review of the basics of English language mechanics because this helps writers avoid common errors that can undermine the quality of their writing. Mistakes in grammar, spelling, or punctuation can distract readers, detract from the credibility of the message.

The saying 'less is more' holds true; I consistently review fundamental English concepts, such as verb tenses, the 'To be' verb, regular and irregular verbs. By revisiting these basics, you'll find that your options for building a more diverse vocabulary become significantly broader. Embrace the process, for it is through these challenges that your writing skills will flourish and become more comprehensive."

Obtener retroalimentación de profesores, otros estudiantes o hablantes nativos será muy útil porque te permitirá: 1) identificar errores o puntos a mejorar, 2) visualizar tu avance, 3) motivarte a comunicarte, ya que alguien estará recibiendo lo que dices/escribes. Aunque se pueden recibir comentarios de herramientas de revisión, recuerda que son las personas las que utilizan el idioma como tal y por ello podrán darte comentarios más útiles en el uso cotidiano.

Usually, students get the feeling that mistakes are something bad, embarrassing and worth hiding. THAT is a big mistake!! Teach students that the culture of mistakes is necessary for improvement. After all, we have come all this way by learning from our mistakes! Generate rubrics, games and steps for them to follow. That way, students will grow to the feeling that mistakes are expected, and can be solved with the correct steps. Once they are autonomous, the way towards learning from re writing will be rewarding!

Cometer errores es una parte indispensable del aprendizaje, por ello jamás debes tenerles miedo. Lo importante es que luego de equivocarte, logres identificar los errores y su causa, para aprender de ello y ojalá no volver a cometerlos (¡pero sí cometer otros! Que es parte del proceso). No dudes en consultar cuando no te sientas seguro de algo, investigar un poco más allá y te darás cuenta de que cada error se termina convirtiendo en una posibilidad de mejora.

As a teacher, it's essential to encourage ESL students to view writing as an enjoyable and fulfilling activity. When students select topics that genuinely interest them, it unlocks their creativity and imagination, allowing ideas to flow freely onto the page. Fun is substantial when it comes to learning! Personally, I have experimented through games online, team instances and attractive deadlines that enhance creativity in writing, regardless the level or learning difficultly. Celebrating achievements is a great way to generate the willing to write more. Go ahead and have fun!!

One thing I have found to be very helpful is making the learning fun. Gamification of learning has massive benefits when learning a new language. I know first hand with apps like Duolingo. Language acquisition can feel monotonous so using games and texts that interest the learner can make the process much more fun. Material that is learned while having fun is always has the possibility for higher retention. We all have those learning experiences that we remember when we learned through a fun experience.

As an ESL and LOTE teacher, one common tip, is to watch movies! Pick a movie you know super well - the kind of movie you can quote all the lines from. Then watch that movie dubbed in the target language e.g. English for ESL, and with English subtitles. This way, you already know the plot, characters, what's going on etc. and you can hear the line in the target language to understand "oh, that's how that's said" - especially when students are stuck in a "translate everything word by word" mindset - this can really highlight how this usually DOES NOT work. Also, people read subtitles automatically, presenting another mode - how it's written as an example. HW idea: present 3 phrases from your movie - workshop the structure in class.

Now, let's delve into what else to consider. If you have the habit of watching movies you love repeatedly, engaging in the famous "binge-watching," why not take the opportunity to watch them with their original dubbing? By doing so, you can observe different vocabularies and aspects, further enhancing your understanding of the language.

Educators should consider students' linguistic backgrounds and facilitate knowledge transfer between languages. It's crucial to understand that language acquisition, especially in active skills such as writing, takes time. Identifying linguistic patterns, cultural concepts, and promoting contextual understanding can help students develop their writing skills.

Students need good writing models, and they need to make the connection between what they are thinking and how to communicate it. With this in mind, ask questions, then write what the students say on the board. They can copy that into their notebooks. In this way, they see correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation while still using their own original English language. There are a couple of different views on how to do this. One view is to write exactly what the student says even if it is not grammatically correct. It is important that they have a connection between what they said and what is written. Then you can discuss, write, and model correct language. Another option is to discuss the correct grammar and then write it down correctly.

Templates and writing models are indispensable tools for ESL students. Providing them with clear and structured frameworks helps them understand how to organize their thoughts effectively and communicate them cohesively. By offering templates for various types of writing, such as essays, letters, or reports, students can see concrete examples of how to structure their own work. Additionally, exposing students to well-written samples serves as a model for language use, style, and tone, helping them develop their writing skills and language proficiency.

Definitely writing models are useful but when you focus on the writing process rather than the product, you teach students how to write better. Giving enough practice of writing outlines is crucial. Moving from outline to drafting helps students work on their paragraphs and see how cohesion and coherence must go hand in hand. Sometimes students focus too much on logic and forget that varying sentence structure is also a key factor in good writing. I use collaborative tasks where each paper rotates through class and at the end we check each writing text for cohesion and coherence as a class. Jumbled writing is also very useful for checking cohesion and coherence. I love teaching writing at all levels.
