What are some tips for managing time during the interview process?

You can manage time when answering interview questions by making sure you stop once you have answered the question. A common thing that we all do is continue to speak and elaborate even after answering the question- remind yourself you are done, and it's okay if you hear a pause from the interviewer- pauses can be good.

To an extent but know that there may be unseen opportunities behind the curtain. In military to industry recruiting we would encourage veteran job candidates to interview even when the advertised position was not a perfect fit. Often the hiring authority would have another position that was exactly what the candidates was seeking. Skills like leadership are not typically well assessed on a resume but come out in a conversation. Set goals but be flexible.

In the IT industry, understanding the specific skills and certifications required for various roles is crucial. As a recruitment executive, I've observed that candidates who set SMART goals for their job search, such as targeting roles that match their skill set and experience, tend to be more successful. It's important to be realistic about the positions you're applying for and to tailor your approach to each application, which increases the chances of securing an interview and ultimately, the job.

Answer the point. Listen to the question carefully. Before the interview, research the company, the role, and common interview questions. Practice your responses to common questions to ensure you can articulate your thoughts clearly and concisely.

If everything was urgent then nothing becomes urgent. The same goes for your interview process. If you are actively looking, apply to 10 positions, get 10 interviews and pass them all, resulting in 10 tasks (development, design etc.)... there is no way you can actually do all of these. Understand what it is you want, be intentional with where you are applying and prioritise what positions should take up more of your time than others. Go to the extend of ranking them, then go after them!

Ahead of your interview, preparation around your previous skills and experience is essential, and once completed it can used for all your interviews. List the key skills/experience that are important for the role. For each skill list an example of the skills you want to demonstrate using the STAR format ( situation, task, actions, result) so you can talk through each example of your experience. Ensure these scenarios are fresh in your mind and are detailed enough that you can adapt them to answer a variety of questions. Then for each interview detailed research around the company, the role, and the interviewer, based on your research prepare 3+ questions that appropriate for the role.

Pace yourself with the job search activity and particularly interviews; the whole process is emotionally challenging and sucks your energy. Pace yourself and take time between interviews to recharge and reflect.

Following up shows enthusiasm & professionalism, keeping you fresh in the interviewer's mind. It's a thank you for their time, and a chance to reiterate your interest & skills, maybe even address something you forgot to mention. Aim for 24-48 hours, be concise & positive, and you'll stand out!
