What are your best tips for personalizing cold calls?

It’s so important to detach from closing the deal. When you’re actually trying to help people and solve their problems, you’re going to automatically personalize your message. You’re looking for something you can help with 💡.

UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACH! If you're boring, this won't be for you :) My objective in the first 5-10 seconds of a cold call is to: 1) Intro myself 2) Make my target persona aware my call is cold. 3) Show awareness of their struggle with a challenge I can eliminate 4) Get them laughing - earning another 30 seconds. I open with an icebreaker that follows the following structure: Hi {First name}, my name's Jon Selig, and this call's colder than ____. Cold can be used in many idioms that describe emotional reactions to problems OR relationships between relevant stakeholders. I eliminate the divide between sellers & marketers. So, I hit CMOs or heads of sales with: "This call's colder than the relationship between sales and marketing."

I learned quickly the riches are in the niches. When you try to catch a bunch of fish at once... you don't catch any. You try to catch the whale... you nail it! Pick a niche. Know everything about that audience. Write campaigns to those audiences. Make it happen.

The best way to personalize cold calls is to believe that the list is intrinsically qualified. In other words, build lists of like personas and ask everyone the same compelling question. Some people will respond in kind and some people will let you know the timing isn't right. Cold calling is an action and not a reaction outbound. When you’re emailing or social selling, you’re waiting for a reaction. Vs. You get action when you speak to someone on a cold call. To standout you need to know how to ride a bike. It takes balance, thought, intention and attitude. This is all part of a cold call. Everything needs to balance like tone, delivery, icebreaker. Thought is the research you put into your ICP. Your thought while riding is peddling. Intention what is your end goal. I am going to make from point A to B. Lots of time is agreeing to a demo. Lastly, attitude, if you have a negative attitude it will collapse the whole experience. Because that’s where it starts. 🚴♂️ = outstanding cold 🥶 call 📞.

Whilst most people say to use the name, its important to be wary of using it too much. I've received a lot of calls where my name gets used five or six times in the pitch, it disrupts the flow of the conversation and can often make the call sound odd.

When cold calling it’s important to sound interesting and professional. I recommend offering something of value such as a free evaluation and offering to be a resource for questions and information. This can help to keep a prospect on the phone and make them more likely to call you back.

As someone who has had my name mispronounced on more than a few occasions, this one hits home. Use their name, and if you aren't sure of the pronunciation, ask! It may make you feel uncomfortable or ignorant to ask about pronunciation, but it is far better than having to be corrected after you've said it wrong multiple times. A person's name is such an integral part of who they are...respect that.

Don't just ask the questions about who they are, but get to know them and be genuine. You must really care about who they are as a person and make a friend. Find common likes is the first conversation piece. The rest is showing your character, hopefully that's good. Otherwise, you shouldn't be in sales.

Prospects like speaking with people, not robots. Avoid the "customer service or sales voice", use downward inflections, speak slowly, and confidently. Be human.

Let them talk, with many decision makers (if you've picked your target data properly!) will give a lot of information off the back of one or two relevant "open" questions. Reacting to a pain point or reason that they freely give you will help you link your solution to a real issue they are having, this will give you a great result and help improve your call quality

I love to use humor, if I can make someone laugh just a bit, it is an instant bond. A laugh is permission in my book. So I’ll start out with something like “hi Bill, happy NOT Monday, how are YOU?” or “Happy ALMOST Friday”. People almost always identify with that. And when I ask them how they are, I ask them slowly, I pause, I emphasize it, I mean it. They know it’s not a routine “howareyou?”. So they answer. That gives me a chance for more humor… well, you SOUND like you’re hanging in there Bill, that’s good… listen, I caught you cold, I’ll be brief, I know you’re busy. I called because I saw etc…. And I think we can help. Can we talk now or should we set up a better time? What works? They’re laughing and already my friend, they say yes.

Open-ended questions are what all salespeople ask. Binary, very targeted questions at the beginning of a call will get much less resistance. Gain the trust first, ask broader questions later.

The worst thing a caller can do on a cold call is ask super direct, pointed questions to someone they don't know. "Tell me about your revenue strategy" "Tell me your technology stack" I always cringe, and reps get either a door slammed in their face or they get some super-hesitant response. When you're calling someone out of the blue, instead of interrogation, prove to them that you know what you're talking about, and you're worthy of a conversation with them. That sounds like this: "Hey John, I noticed you're a technical support manager, a lot of the support managers I speak to utilize Zendesk on a daily basis, is that you?"

There's a fine line between a conversation and an interrogation when it comes down to cold calls or sales calls. We use different question types in a natural conversation. Nobody says "Tell me more about that" to their friends or bombards them with Wh- questions to sound like a "professional friend". For a natural conversation, combine open-ended questions with YES/NO questions, Multiple-choice questions, and tag questions! I think asking the right questions and creating a comfortable zone for your prospect to answer those questions are more important than focusing on the question types.

Open-ended questions lead us to valuable answers, and those answers open doors to opportunities. They encourage prospects to share more. Unlike closed questions that could lead to a 'no,' open-ended questions keep the conversation flowing and avoid any awkward moments, keeping the prospect engaged. So, instead of asking, 'Do you have 15 minutes on Monday?' you could say, 'I have a 15-minute slot available on Monday at 12 pm. Let's schedule a call to discuss and address any questions or hesitations you might have.'"

Active listening is one of the best skills you can acquire while cold calling, and it only can be mastered by using two tricks: - genuinely being curious - not interrupting Get those two down and watch all your prospects spill their life story.

One of the easiest ways to lose credit quickly is to get too excited when the prospect mentioned THE pain point you know your solution solves for and you don't wait to tell them, or worse, cut them off before they finish asking you a question because you know what they're asking and the answer. Remember, this may be your 5th conversation of the day, but this is your first impression to them. In a day and age when everyone and everything is fighting to pull attention, focus on who you're speaking with. Make them feel important just by listening when they talk.

Gamify listening! Go in with a framework drawing on paper with boxes for what information you need to capture. It forces you to collect the information and see your gaps visually. It also helps to see connections or gaps between information!

For me, a cold call is just a step in the process. My only goal in a cold call is to get a commitment for a discovery meeting, not to present my solution. Don't be the "show up and throw up" salesperson. Meaning, don't be the one who is so eager to talk about you, your company, and your product, that you forget who the focus is on in a cold call. That being said, DO HAVE A HOOK! I'm not agreeing to a follow up call if all you can do is present me with a deck of "stuff" rather than solutions. But remember, the hook should be pretty generalized at this point, as you don't really know what's going to move the needle for your prospect until you've asked far more questions.

Make sure you completed your research and know enough to offer value to the prospect. What does the company do? How do they do it? Who are the clients? What industries do they serve? Their business model and pricing Who are their competitors? You name it. When you know the data, you can put together an irresistible offer that takes them from their biggest pains to cheating the greatest desires with your products and solutions.

With a pick-up rate from 5 to 15%, researching each prospect is a nightmare. It's much better to have a very tight list of your ICP - relevancy will always beat personalisation.

It's so easy to use a tag line or regurgitate what you think is best about your product. No One Cares. If you've gotten this far in to the call, and you've uncovered some pain, tell them how what you're offering does to address those. Even if you don't think it's important, you won't get to show them all your bells and whistles if you don't address what they see in the moment as a thorn in their side.

Respect their time: In my experience, In the world of sales, where every second counts, respecting a prospect's time during a cold call is not just a courtesy; it's a strategic imperative. Cold calling can be a powerful tool when done right, but it can also alienate potential customers if their time is not valued. By valuing their time, you make a positive first impression, build trust, and set the stage for a productive and mutually beneficial relationship. In a competitive landscape, respecting a prospect's time can be the difference between closing a deal and facing rejection. So, the next time you make a cold call, remember that respecting their time is not just a nice gesture – it's a pathway to success.

Cold calling is frequently viewed as a daunting task, but I encourage you to shift your perspective. I used to approach it with the mindset that as long as I was making those calls, I was fulfilling my responsibilities. It became a way to proactively engage with my work. Embracing this perspective not only reduced the apprehension but also allowed me to focus on doing my job well, knowing that positive outcomes would naturally follow. Have fun with it, spoil yourself with a small chocolate with every 20 calls, or referral, or insightful business conversation, whatever :)

Listen to an upbeat song, do a silly dance but definitely smile. People feel your energy through a phone and enthusiasm is contagious.

Cold calling is tough, and it takes preparation and practice to be good at it. But if you look at the statistics out there, it is still one of the most effective, if not the most effective means of cold prospecting. But doing it well gives you such a leg up on those that won't.
