Chemical emergencies come with a whole new set of rules, not only do you have to determine what chemical it is, different PPE is required, and in addition methods of disposal are also different depending on the type of chemical, and of course fighting a chemical fire means different chemicals used to extinguish the fire. Various parts of the OSH acts provide guidance, in dealing with chemicals, such as the The Hazardous Substance Act 15 of 1973 for South Africa, for the UK COSHH Control of Substances Hazardous to health refers.

In case of a serious spill or leak, evacuate the area and contact emergency services immediately. Do not come in contact or inhale the spilled or leaking chemicals and ensure the affected area is sealed off and others are warned to maintain a safe distance.

As a school inspector and academic director, I advocate for stringent storage protocols for hazardous chemicals—clear labelling, secure units, and regular inspections. Handling guidelines, especially for students, include education on risks, proper use of PPE, and supervised experiments. If trapped in an elevator, use the emergency button and wait for help. In low-light or confined environments, use a flashlight and move cautiously. In the event that evacuation is necessary, follow exit signs and use the stairs for a safe exit.

Always trust your guts and if you sense a danger, keep looking for an emergency escape way to keep yourself and others safe. Do not confront a violent person.

It's important to prepare for the incident of a sudden cardiac arrest which can happen to you or your collegaue without any warning and indepent of "dangerous work". The most important preperation is to learn and regularly train CPR and make sure that there's an AED available close to the workspace.
