Why is diversity important in Database Engineering mentorship?

Databases across the world have different usage patterns. Some geographic reasons have data sovereignty requirements and somewhere entry cost is a barrier to adopting new technology. To understand how requirements impact database design and configuration tuning diversity is very important to understand and design better databases.

It's important to get perspectives from someone who has faced similar issues to you - and as a woman in tech I can tell you that MANY times advice from a man just didn't work for me. There are buckets full of gendered and racialized expectations, barriers, and assumptions that mean advice often has to reflect our own lived experiences to be most useful. For example, men would advice me to be more direct, which would usually get me pulled aside to tell me I was too aggressive, too bossy, or too abrasive. I had to learn ways to be direct that worked for WHO I am.

Diversity in Database Engineering is very important due to following factors: 1) Database Technologies have become more diverse. Earlier we only had RDBMS Architecture. Now we have Non relational databases, open source etc. 2) Data Analytics and Data Warehousing require analysing and storing data in wide range of formats. 3) Big Data has come a long way and need proper handling. 4) Data Security is becoming a prime area of concern.

Monocultures make bad decisions. There are many studies that show this in multiple ways. The wider the variety of lived experiences in the room, the most likely the team will come to decisions that more accurate, more innovative, and more useful. This of course applies best when the leaders on the team - formal and informal - understand the complexities of leading through conflict, coming to a consensus that doesn't always uphold the status quo, and guiding people with multiple strong viewpoints towards a common purpose that everyone is truly invested in.

In my experience, diversity can be fostered thus in Database Engineering in real-life evolving situations. Take such mentorship slowly when working with diverse people so you are all using the same definitions, methodically (have processes that have gradually developed in place which support both developer/user sides), and systematically (first certain types of data followed by other types, over time) with feedback between the types of db aspects created. This way when you get to a point when you have to migrate a big database/set the ground rules between you and who you're doing it for are clear, the expectations of what will be sent and received and how are clear, and then there's precedent to fix what possibly could go wrong too.
