Isn't it sad that we need to re-write our resumes each time we apply for a different job just for a human to read it? There are so many times I have had the right keywords with a synonym - so it might get rejected but the meaning was the same. Crazy world we live in for sure. I still say it's very very sad that a robot scans our resume through. Makes us work extra hard and becomes a number game, right?

This easy customization doesn't require you to amend the body/bullet points of your resume every time. The internet has made it hard for recruiters to sort through hundreds of applications, so the ATS is a valuable tool for them, but naturally, it's not always good for job-seekers. Yes agree totally, keywords are very important from an ATS perspective. The issue here is the pickiness of the different systems and the diversity of systems around. Having MS Office as a key skill is not going to match an ATS requirement of Advanced MS Excel. Match the descriptions in the job advertisement as closely as possible. Mention the skills you do NOT have in covering letter and say you are willing to upskill in these areas, this will be a tick box against an ATS check.

The best source of resume keywords is the job posting itself. Read it carefully and look for the main requirements, responsibilities, and preferences. Highlight the keywords that match your skills and experience, and use them in your resume. For example, if the job posting says “Experience with Python, SQL, and data analysis”, you can use those keywords in your resume to show that you have those skills.

Unfortunately too many keywords on a CV can shout of desperation and can make a CV very cluttered looking. Nobody can be highly skilled at 25/30 skills! I'd recommend 8/9 maximum and substitute as needed for each role you apply for, including the most relevant skills each time.

In my experience there is usually way too much information on a CV. Streamline it and only include task based activities for your current role. For previous roles only include key achievements. Unless its an academic or medical CV, don't go over 2 pages for EU/US CV's. For some countries in Asia longer CV's may be acceptable.
