You just started your first design job. What are some common mistakes you should avoid?

Building a design job needs cautious guidance as to avoid costly mistakes. Understanding the project brief completely is necessary, as is fighting the drive to overdesign. Effective communication, focus for the target audience, and openness to feedback are key. Test designs on several devices, focusing fluency and something and verifying accessibility. Finally, strain quality over speed to ensure the honesty of your work.

Understanding what the Client really wants is key, sometimes they struggle with offering their opinion and it can help to ask what they don't want to help frame and drive the conversation. Most people may take a bit to get to what they want versus whta they need but they almost always know what they don't want. As a result they can understand you are working for a solution for them and it helps break down an hesitancy or communication issues.

As you start your first design job, avoid common mistakes like neglecting user research, overcomplicating designs, ignoring feedback, working in isolation, relying too much on trends, skipping accessibility considerations, and rushing through prototyping and testing. Research, for me, is always the first step in addressing a problem or any requirement. From as simple as understanding all your clients needs and wants, to finetuning to a more effective output- research makes all these process efficient. You will always find a need for reference in every step of the design process so a solid, well-prepared background would be vital in creating a design solution. Research is not just about the general approach too, for example, researching about your client's personal behaviors, lifestyles or interests help you improve your own design sensibility and come up with solutions that could be successful for a lot of your clients

Having that second or third pair of eyes is an amazing opportunity, as extended staring at a design can lead to blindness to minor inconsistencies or tweaks. Engaging in a collaborative design process has highlighted the importance of diverse perspectives. Feedback has proven to be an invaluable asset, offering insights that I might have overlooked. I've learned to approach feedback with openness, actively listening and seeking clarification rather than taking it personally. It's crucial to ensure the feedback received is contextual and precise, aligning with the project's objectives.

Feedback is essential for growth. Be open to constructive criticism from colleagues, clients, and stakeholders. Use feedback as an opportunity to improve your skills and deliver a better end product.

Being a new member of the team comes with a large responsibility of learning what the team considers important in the design workflow and what part do you play in the design process. 1) Join the team with an open mind to assimilate the work style, work culture and processes that exist in the company. 2) Understand what gap have they been hired to fill, and discuss with the team the best ways that they can fulfill that role. 3) Need to understand and strike a delicate balance between preserving one's individual design style, capabilities and uniqueness, and finding ways to still be cohesive with the teams work and what is needed from a certain project. The design work of a new designer should not live in isolation.

Attention to detail is a hallmark of good design. Pay close attention to typography, spacing, color choices, and other design elements. Small details can significantly impact the overall quality of your work.

In my early days as a design intern, I was working on a project where I was responsible for designing the user interface for a new feature. I was so focused on my own ideas and perspective that I didn’t seek input from others. I spent a lot of time perfecting my design, only to find out later that another team member had already worked on a similar feature in the past and had valuable insights that could have saved me time and effort. This experience taught me the importance of collaboration. Now, I make it a point to regularly share my work with my team, ask for their opinions, and discuss my ideas with them. This not only helps me get different perspectives but also fosters a sense of teamwork and shared ownership in the design process.

Collaboration is often key in a design environment. Communicate with team members, share ideas, and be open to collaboration. Working in isolation can limit creativity and hinder the development of well-rounded designs.

One useful tip that works wonders is to keep a record sketchbook; either physical or digital, for your designs. It's always good to practice what you've learnt by either making something new from scratch or refining your existing drafts after learning something new. A good old pocket sketchbook with a pencil works for me as I can carry it everywhere, write/draw all the inspiration I get my way and then can go back to it for reference in the future.

If you must be more valuable in the design industry. I will advice, you try learning a new thing everyday, learn new skills, learn new implementations So you will keep being valuable and creative

An important rule of thumb when entering any new company or team is to uphold principles of honesty, integrity and sincerity. Hard skills such as design, tools etc can be learnt with practice and dedication, but the above soft skills will determine how productive your presence will be for the team and your own future work with the new team.

Understand your limits and don't take on more work than you can handle. It's important to deliver quality work on time rather than compromising quality for quantity

It is crucial to envision how the design result will appear in reality. F.i., when designing packaging, one should not solely evaluate it on-screen but consider how the consumer will perceive it later. F.e., we place fruit in the packaging and then the packaging into the crate, just as the consumer will see it in the end. Similarly, an advertisement should be printed in its original format and simulated within a magazine. Marketing materials for the point of sale should be simulated where they will be placed. This allows us to observe how they interact with their surroundings, whether the font sizes are readable, and if the logo and brand name are visible in the environment. So you can avoid faults.
