You need to create custom charts for your next presentation. What tools should you use?

I wouldn't start here. Before this I would start with "what message do I want my audience to take away from this?" Am I trying to encourage them to take action, to agree my proposed approach, to pique their curiousity to dig into the topic further? Then I would think about 'what insight am I trying to convey with this chart?' Having those clear first is the best way to then help select the chart type that would require the least mental load to reach that insight. In other words, get clear on the message first before choosing the format for it.

Há muitas tecnologias para este fim, e mesmo os gráficos do MS Excel, uma das opções há mais tempo ao dispor dos usuários para isto, podem ser editados em inúmeras características, enriquecendo muito o resultado final, e deixando-o mais compreensível.

In my view, the first step is to identify the message (insights, call to action, prescription, prediction, etc) that you want to convey. Based on the message that you want to convey, the audience profile, mode of presentation (document, presentation, video recording) some types of charts may fit better than others. Charts are one of the communication aids. What you want to communicate should determine the aid that you use.

Start with pen and paper as in what you would like to show on charts this will help you visualise the output. Customisation of chart include variety of techniques ( starting from selecting right charts, sorting, grouping, formatting, highlighting, reference lines filtering, parameters, customs calculations etc. If you are beginner then work out with Excel and Power point that would be enough to start else you can use industry wide tools like Tableau, Powerbi, python etc which provide more features & control for customisations.

I feel choosing the chart type is important as this needs to know your meeting stakeholders and objective of the meeting. MS Excel tool is enough to create some insightful charts/reports.

If I have the data source available, like a spreadsheet some csv file, then that would be the place to start. If possible load the data in some database or use excel's features to load data if you want to go with low tech option

Whether it's 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 from a reputable database, 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 from surveys, or a mix of both, the accuracy and relevance of your data source will dictate the integrity of your presentation.

I've found that the chart type is dependent on the audience the presentation is aimed at. There are many fun and creative ways to present data and convey the story. In more "structured" environments, such as financial institutes, graphs showing trends are critical and also a bit more "plain". If we present to a more creative environment, infographics and 3D charts is way more fun in telling the story. The key is to determine what the story is, who you will be telling it to and what you want to achieve by telling the story in the first place.

Choosing the correct visualisation software can be one of the key decisions to deliver your story. As sometimes we over do things for a non complex data and use advanced tools like tableau or SPSS. If your story can be neatly delivered by using excel charts, then, there’s no need to invest a lot of time and effort in advanced tools. Similarly, if you need to present a dynamic visualisation you can use Tableau, Power BI or any other statistical or visualisation tool.

If I am creating custom charts for my next presentation, I would do the following: Use the BI tool we currently have in place. This will be a similar look to whom you are presenting to. The data has been cleaned and audited and should be error free. If you are using PowerBI, you can pull data into your slides. I also create dashboards based on qualitative and quantitative data that is not loaded in our BI tool. For this, I normally use excel. Adding dashboards to a PowerPoint slide allow you to make updates on the fly.

I always try to use create charts for slide presentations that are native to the presentation tool. For example, when using Google Slides, I create the charts in Google Sheets and paste the chart into the slide. This way, I can change the data in the Google Sheet and have the chart update automatically in the slide deck. The same goes for PowerPoint and Excel. No more copy-paste of charts when they need to be updated – super convenient.

When including data and charts in slide presentations, I always try to shave away details and only include the bare minimum. Use the slides to tell the story and highlight main points, then direct stakeholders to the underlying analysis and reports for further details.

Where you will display is key. A chart to be used in Teams people will see on a PC is not the same as a YouTube people will see on their phone, or a live event with 3 giant screens behind you. Remember, if your have your own fonts for your brand, always convert your presentation to PDF if it will be displayed from a computer that may not have those fonts installed - such as a hotel conference room computer.

Além da validação fria - matemática - dos números expostos, é salutar criar versões diferentes do mesmo gráfico, alterando algumas características, para VER o quanto isto impacta ao final. Ter atenção especial com títulos, subtítulos e legendas, que servirão de orientação ao consumidor final. Comparar com trabalhos semelhantes de outros é excelente forma de aprendizado, mas também é importante comparar com que nós mesmos já fizemos.

Charts can be refined in comparison to various data of same category. while doing this the data is ensured for errors & possible miscalculations and then refined over the period of time, the final output is then compared with similar data for a broader perspective over a chart to achieve optimal data visualization.

Once the design is done, validate the data and the message to check if it meets the needs and get feedback from peers, clients, or colleagues

I am a fun of graphs—a picture worth a thousand words. The graph should be simple and easy to understand. If you need to do a lot of talking to introduce your chart, then your graphics may need improvements.

Desde sempre, uma representação gráfica de uma informação destina-se à corroborar aquilo que se está informando verbalmente. É impensável queremos afirmar algo, que o gráfico contradiz. Por isto, é muito importante ter muito claro em mente a ordem das coisas: em análise de dados, partimos de uma hipótese, buscamos os dados relativos à ela, e criamos a análise com frieza e objetividade. Ao final do processo poderemos ter ou não, a confirmação de nossa hipótese. Em caso negativo é necessário ter disposição para reanalisar os dados e compreender qual o novo viés ou caminho que eles apontam, para direcionar os esforços práticos. Só então pensamos no aspecto da apresentação - quando assimilamos totalmente o resultado do trabalho analítico.

Always do a demo run with charts before presentation in order to avoid any hiccups, as sometimes the conclusion doesn’t align with the visuals due to some technical glitch that can jeopardise your efforts. Also, make color coded flashcards for each visual so that you can pin point what you want to deliver without getting clusmy during a presentation.

I use 3 approaches before creating a custom visual: 1) Employing advanced DAX patterns for conditional formatting. 2) Manipulating constant lines and error bars in Power BI. 3) Utilizing Charticulator.

A picture says more than a 1000 words, so you use pictures to get your message across, people will focus on what you tell rather than reading your slides or graphs while you talk.

Pela minha experiência, o primeiro tópico deveria ser "Entenda o requisito de negócio e qual resposta é necessária para que o objetivo seja alcançado" Para aí depois, você "REFLETIR" sobre o gráfico que será utilizado. A visualização tem que responder NA EXATA MEDIDA o que o requisito negócio necessita. Então é importante refletir sobre qual objetivo visual você utilizará. Coloque um ao lado do outro, faça uma rodada de revisão técnica com seu usuário, peça a opinião dele. Não tome decisões baseado nas "vozes da sua cabeça" rs Tome muito cuidado com as "receitas de bolo" que são compartilhadas por aí, beleza? Isso pode atrapalhar vc, no momento de suas reflexões acerca da visualização. Dúvidas? Chamaí!

Há um passo a passo aqui ilustrado, que está encadeado de forma equivocada no meu ponto de vista. Alguns podem se confundir e compreender de forma errada o fluxo do processo.
