You want to advance your career in education. What steps should you take to become a leader?

To advance my career in education and become a leader, I prioritize knowing myself deeply. This involves a thorough understanding of my strengths and weaknesses, acknowledging my areas of expertise as well as areas for growth. By cultivating this self-awareness, I gain insight into how I can best contribute to my team and organization. Moreover, understanding myself allows me to empathize with and relate to those around me, fostering strong interpersonal connections and effective collaboration. Ultimately, leadership begins with knowing and leading oneself, paving the way for guiding and inspiring others.

To be a leader in education, one must have a deep awareness of oneself as a teacher. One's educational philosophy is shaped by core values such as integrity, empathy, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Influential leadership is fueled by convictions in the potential of every student and the transformational potential of education. Proficiency in teaching, effective communication, and teamwork building are all examples of skills. Expertise could span from developing curricula to integrating educational technology. One's interests can be in teacher professional development, STEM projects, or inclusive education. Leading cutting-edge educational initiatives, fostering fairness and diversity, and improving student accomplishment.

As I advanced my career in education and became more of a leader, I had to dive into who I was as an educator. I started by acknowledging where I was strong and where I needed more guidance. I continued to fortify my areas of expertise while building up the areas where I needed more assistance. Going to professional learning sessions helped a lot. There was, and still is, a lot of self learning that takes place and discussions with mentors. I really had to look at my educational philosophy as well. What do I truly believe in regarding education and myself. Doing these things helped to cultivate a type of leader that I am.

Everyone is a leader, in one capacity or another. The issue is whether one can bring about positive change. Understanding your leadership style and the ability to invest in others is key, to creating a viable and healthy community. As for steps one should take - take a personal inventory of your strengths and growth areas and engage in professional development. Finally, ask the people that you work with for constructive feedback.

Further training is essential for self-development. Without learning, you cannot successfully teach and pass on your knowledge. Further education also means exchange and in this area it's essential to always be up to date and to encourage others to develop themselves and continue their education. It is also part of our responsibility as an educator.

Read leadership books would be my recommendation e.g. 'The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. This helped me to move eventually into a headteacher position, and I still use the book today when coaching others.

como educadora siempre estoy en constante aprendizaje, ya sea con algún curso, con métodos de enseñanza diferentes al aplicado. cada alumno es un desafío porque vienen con intereses distintos por ello hay que estar siempre en capacitación. este año sin ir mas lejos empiezo una nueva carrera para poder adquirir nuevos conocimientos y poder llevarlos al aula.

This is a gatekeeper for advancement in most education ladders. Getting it out of the way early will make the other endeavors more useful.

It is very important to build your network and reputation up inside and outside your organization if you inspire to become a leader. Being seen and respected as a knowledgeable person with great work ethic goes a long way when being considered for leadership. Also, networking allows you to grow your skills and experience different ways to handle educational challenges. The bigger your network the more resources you have at your fingertips and the better leader you will become. Social media can go along way in promoting your skills and connections around the world.

In today's world, networking at different levels is really important to get into the kind of leadership one needs to know about. These provide a very good scope of interaction and building a legit environment of sponsors, collaborators and supporters to come together and decide the furthering of the organisation's agena. Social media, podcast, newsletters etc will help in much better way for the same.

Es fundamental una red, no solo para adquirir reputación sino para que otros también sean vistos como grandes potenciales educadores. a través de estas redes uno encuentra en quien apoyarse, un compañero de equipo, quien te de una mano, un colega.

I find that seeking advice from those around me who are in leadership roles has been valuable. Furthermore, taking time to ask questions such as, "How might I approach this situation regarding x, y, z?" Getting feedback and showing that you use it also strengthens the bond between you and a leader. By seeking out advice or input from someone who is an established leader, you get to learn more and even craft your own style. Don't hesitate to network, listen, learn, fail, succeed, etc. Don't be afraid to seek out a mentor.

Seeking feedback from those in leadership around you is key to your growth, but don't forget about your students! Students are CONSTANTLY giving you feedback and it's rarely verbal. Students struggling to master the lesson's objective? That's feedback on your presentation of the content. Students finishing work too quickly? That's feedback on the rigor. Of course you should seek out feedback from those with experience, but your students truly hold the key to feedback on your effectiveness inside the classroom. As far as seeking opportunities, take advantage of every one that is aligned with your goals and look at the process as professional development, even if you aren't offered the position.

Another thing I discovered, as a leader you need to reflect continuously on your development and practices to remain effective and effecient. Reflections after every achievement or mishap are necessary because you introspect and discover your own strength and challenges.

One thing I have found helpful is up-skilling yourself with relevant skills and skills expertise to be a dynamic and professional Leader.

Work on developing essential leadership skills such as communication, decision-making, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and strategic planning through practice and self-reflection.

Focus on growth. So often in education we get caught up in achieving a goal (75% of student on grade level by the end of the year) but remember that sometimes growth is measured differently. Maybe that student didn't finish the year on grade level but in August they were 3 grade levels behind and in May they're only behind 1 grade level; that's a HUGE win! Maybe the student who struggled to read was finally identified as dyslexic, also a huge win - they can get the support they need now. You have to be in it for the students. Keep in mind that growth looks different for everyone and we really need to celebrate those "small" wins. Those seemingly small wins along the way really help to refill your bucket and keep you going.

If you are passionate about students and staff, and you articulate a clear purpose and core beliefs, you are setting the stage for success.

Without a clear and specific purpose coupled with passion, one may be easily detracted by focusing on many things. Being patient with longsuffering is an attribute needed by each Leader in education.

The first step in leadership development is self-awareness. Understanding your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your values and priorities, is critical to becoming an effective leader. This self-reflection helps you identify areas for improvement and sets the foundation for growth. The next step is education

I am 75 and retired after 46.5 years in education as teacher, coach, and administrator. I am proud to have retired as principal of an IBMYP school, Roy W Martin MS in 12/2016.

Self-reflection is key to your growth. Ask yourself: What could have gone better? What moves did I make that impacted student outcomes? What happened because I did that? What would have happened if I didn't do that? How can I plan to incorporate more x (questions, feedback, checks for understanding, etc.) in my lessons? What is the unit goal and how does this lesson fit into that goal? Reflection will have you focusing on the small changes you can make to get big results. If you're struggling and don't know where to start, seek guidance and support from the leaders within your school. Come up with 3 questions to ask yourself after each lesson and begin there. Remember, the proof is in the student work!

In my experience it is important to ask why I want to be a leader. “What makes me qualified”, “how do I move into leadership” and “what steps do I take” are all tactical questions. A real question for me is why would I want to be a leader. What is my motivation? Where can I have the most impact? What is my purpose? Schools are often inherently hierarchical institutions where power is unevenly distributed and segregated. Often times the prospect of position and power is an unconscious drive toward leadership. I’ve had the pleasure of being mentored by equity driven leaders who supported me in growing into leadership to create more equitable power sharing structures. Do the deep work to know why moving into leadership is important.
