You want to be an effective mentor in motivational speaking. What’s the first step?

To be a effective mentor and motivate your audience.... A very first and very important step is A.) To put yourself in your audience shoes. B.) Be sure you have been through typically the kind of journey similar to your audience. For eg: If you are Motivating a CA Student you yourself should have gone through ups and downs of the course journey.

I 100% agree with the idea of assessing your readiness but don't overassess your readiness. Many of us struggle from Imposter Syndrome. Don't get so concerned that you aren't ready that you don't just start. At some point, you have to step out of your comfort zone and give it your all. No doubt you are capable of helping people. Just begin and learn along the way. If you are willing to put the time and energy into this, you are likely ready to learn and mature as a mentor for someone.

Take some time to reflect on why you want to become a mentor in motivational speaking and ask yourself: 1) What motivates and inspires you? 2) What experiences or insights do you have that you believe can positively impact others?

Start by understanding your audience's demographics, interests, and challenges.Clearly define your inspiring message, share personal stories, and address common obstacles. Speak with passion and authenticity, encouraging engagement through discussions or activities. Foster a positive mindset, empower your audience, and continually educate yourself on motivational trends. Develop strong communication skills, seek feedback, and adapt your approach based on audience responses. Establish credibility by showcasing your achievements, and provide practical tools for applying motivational principles in their lives. Remember, effective motivational mentorship is an ongoing process of self-improvement and genuine commitment to helping others succeed.

If you want to be an effective mentor in motivational speaking, ask following questions from yourself: A) Why do you want to do? B) Are your ready with reality facts instead of just coping and pasting from other platform resources? C) In case of any personal questions come from audience side are you ready to face it?

Here's what I've learnt: focus on mentoring those whom you think you're a step ahead of them. Example, if you are already speaking to a regional crowd, your mentee could be someone who like to achieve that milestone and he/she is currently speaking to a national crowd. This removes our fear of being not competent enough in mentoring and focuses on a certain target group that we would love to help.

Because of the time and energy commitment, be honest with how much you can support your potential mentee. Be careful not to fish for them. Mentoring doesn’t even have to look like the traditional way nowadays with the invention of all of these technologies, you can make an impact via the blogs, videos, and content you put out there sharing your journey and lessons from the mistakes you’ve made.

I always feel readiness of self comes with self feedback and self awareness. Second step is to get confirmation of your correct mentoring style from others who are not your actual clients but your trial clients, with whom you can practice and ask for feedback. To reach to a stage where you can mentor others has a path and to reach your goal is also a transformative journey for you as well. So walk the path with care and responsibility.

I might also suggest an informal agreement. Having hosted roughly 150 guests on my podcast, many of them are motivational or keynote speakers. Many of them have mentored me along the way as I got out of the gates in my own speaking practice, none of them had me sign an agreement or presented anything formal. Mentorship can come in different shapes. Ask questions when you have an opportunity, there is much to learn and most people want to help. While the agreement is great if you are formalizing something, genuine curiosity can often be the key when you find someone willing to offer meaningful advice.

Having clear expectations are important because honest with how much bandwidth you have so that they know what to expect. Asking them what they need and want is important but also understanding what is being said beyond the words. Mentoring is such a gift but it can also be potentially energy draining if you don’t know what to expect w/Cadences, Different feedback preference styles, and how to go about communication back and forth in between sessions, some mentees/mentors prefer a simple text message where some prefer a phone call. Hashing all of these out will ensure a better working relationship.

Es muy valioso e importante tener una ruta clara de la mentoria , posteriormente socializarla con el cliente y finalmente hacer un acuerdo detallado. Recomiendo lo siguiente: 1. Define los objetivos con el cliente 2. Asegura en tu comunicación que están alineados y en acuerdo con los mismos 3. Trabaja en tu metodología para llegar al objetivo y meta 4. Planea tus herramientas que serán vitales para lograr aprendizajes 5. Asegura los pasos que aseguran conciencia profunda en los temas abordados 6. Lleva las preguntas y conversaciones a la zona de acciones conscientes con el cliente 7. Ten sesiones de seguimiento posterior a la mentoria ; orientadas a cumplimiento de las acciones conscientes previamente acordadas. Espero sea útil

Planning your mentorship sessions is crucial for effective guidance in motivational speaking. Begin by setting clear goals and objectives for the sessions, aligning them with the mentee's aspirations and areas for growth. Structure each session to cover specific topics or skills, incorporating activities like speech practice, feedback sessions, and discussions on overcoming challenges. Regularly review progress, adapt plans as needed, and ensure there's a balance between instruction, practice, and reflection. By meticulously planning, you create a focused, meaningful, and productive mentorship experience.

Assuming you are ready for mentoring people, who are in need. You still can not have skill set to mentor everyone.There can be challenges. Each person is diffrent. Needs are diffrent. Interests and goals are diffrent. So choose your mentee according to the niech you have. Mentee's goals should be aligned with your core competency and your confidence and skill set. Pass your own test to choose your mentee.

When I mentor someone, I normally have some overview framework based on my experience. If they ask for my point of view, I will share my framework and let them decide how they are going implement it according to the goal that they have set. What I learned about mentoring from research by Brian Uzzi - it is more effective when we give our secret sauce and let the mentee decide how they are going to use it.

I think when it comes to mentoring the student or mentee has to want the mentorship and be open for the knowledge. Most importantly it requires to see if I have something valuable to offer of their liking. Once we agree that it is, I too can learn from them in an area I may need to grow from. This will be a relationship to help each other and build each other if applicable. We must all be open to learn if we open to what we don’t know and it is about relationships as oppose to who can bring what to the table, we can change our outlook on helping each other.

La palabra clave para mi es conexión, ya que si no sabes quién es la persona a la que vas a motivar, será difícil inspirar un cambio significativo. Al establecer una conexión genuina, podrás inspirar y motivar a tu mentee a alcanzar su máximo potencial, lo cual será un gran logro para las dos partes.

Have a preliminary discovery session. Identify the underlying interests of your mentee- align expectation, identify current challenges and discover goal. This is to set boundaries on what's within the scope of mentoring and what's not.
