In my experience, you have 2 options. Pay for a tool or use open source, both options are valid, the only difference is the support and that you have a Company behind your tools. Regarding pay tools, the best are Nessus, Acunetix, and Burp Suite for web scanners. In the case of open source, we can talk about Openvas, nmap, nikto, and zap. All are good options and will depend on your budget and the technical skill that you have for deploy and use on your date-by-day.

In my 29 years of cybersecurity experience, I have always steered away from closed source, licensed products. There are a few exceptions (notably, Faraday), but as cybersecurity is built by cooperation, open source reigns supreme. Yes, you need to learn, but if you are working network vulnerability scanning and only use products, and can't integrate open source or build [parts of] your own toolset, then you might need to reconsider your focus.

A application catalog or application dictionary is a multi department tool that provides the critical information to network, development and security who quickly can modify an application to fix a vulnerability. Some applications that fix is a one button press, others it is total replacement, but getting that choice in the proper hands has been most difficult for most multinationals I have been involved in.
