In my experience over the years the best place to start is your local extension office. They seem to be a wealth of information and they can put you in contact with exceptional individuals to help you no matter what your question may be. Also YouTube is a great resource. Many times I’ll look something up from a variety of different farms that I believe are top quality. Then I’ll take the info I’ve gathered and mix all 2 or 3 methods I watched into the project at hand.

In my experience, there are many resources that want to sell you a product or a technology that may lack real efficacy or long-term value. A few years ago I drove about 40 minutes to a small local sustainable farm to shadow and hang out with the owner for the day. This was a project for one of my classes. In all of my agricultural experiences, this was by far the best knowledge gaining tool I’ve ever experienced. I spent time hands on and also evaluating how the farm ran as a whole. At the end of the day I had a sit down with the owner and got to ask as many questions as I wanted. I came home with pages of notes and many new ideas to grow from. I also gained a like minded friend who is always there to help and answer my questions at any time.

It's important to remember when implementing sustainable practices that the benefits do not manifest all at once. Improving soil health requires consistent dedication to the methodology. It's not that product quality won't improve in year one, but more that soil health and product quality will improve year over year.

I am all for experimenting with new methods. Most of what I try on my land is a variation of something I saw elsewhere over the years. It might be my third year using the same idea but it’s tweaked just a little different than last year’s attempt. I don’t believe anything is ever perfect advancements and improvements can always be made to some extent. So watch what other farms do successfully and go from there. We didn’t get to where we are at without failures.
