You want to showcase your problem-solving skills for a promotion. What's the best way to do it?

Demonstrating problem-solving skills in an interview is pretty simple - 1. Most important - Speak out your thoughts. Ask Interviewer if you are thinking in right direction. 2. Clearly understand the question and ask range of inputs from interviewer. Specify test cases on which you will craft your solutions. Also don't forget to include edge cases. 2. Start from naive solution, then optimize the solution. Eg. Start from TC - O(n2) -> then think of O(nlogn) / O(n) by compensation space complexity. 3. Talk in terms of Space and Time Complexity. Many times using extra space, you can increase you Time Complexity and vice versa.

The keyword is showcase. Pick a problem that has sight and results will be apparent. Pick a problem that will be difficult, one that hasn't been solved yet due to apparent complexity.

When considering a solution, remember that the best approach is not always technical. Being an engineer doesn't limit you to using code alone to solve problems. Unfortunately, I occasionally observe engineers creating technical solutions for non-technical issues. In such cases, it's beneficial to take a step back and assess the situation from a high-level perspective. Seeking feedback from a more experienced colleague on your approach can also be helpful.

At this step bring the decision makers back in and make sure they understand why you are making the choice you have made. What the cost benefits will be and why it's the best option. Don't forget to sell it.

Selecting the optimal solution involves a thorough evaluation of available options against the criteria and constraints of the problem. Apply logical reasoning, critical thinking, and creativity to identify the solution that best aligns with the problem's requirements. Justify your choice by presenting evidence, data, and analysis that support its suitability, feasibility, and effectiveness. Clearly articulate how the chosen solution addresses the problem at hand and delivers the desired outcome. By demonstrating your problem-solving skills in this manner, you showcase your ability to make informed decisions backed by sound reasoning and analysis, enhancing your credibility as a capable problem solver.

Again the keyword is showcase. The one thing missing so far is doing that. At every step, document what you thought and why you made the decisions you made. Once done compile a learning session for the rest of the team and setup a demonstration on how you solved it, making sure to invite product owners and not just developers. To showcase you need to sell your accomplishments publicly.
