You want to be a successful freelancer in Venture Capital. What are the best strategies to get there?

You need to figure out why your skills and experiences are best suited to help VC’s do a task that either they can’t do better or don’t know they need done in a better way. Then you need to get in front of these companies and sell.

All great to pick a specific niche service or skill that you’re good at (e.g. setting up go to market teams, sales playbooks, international expansion, all kinds of dashboards). However, don’t get stuck into concepts and advise (e.g. you should expand to countries with these characteristics), but put it on paper and make it actionable (e.g. here’s an Excel with 30 parameters for 50 countries and based on this data these 7 countries are the most interesting ones to launch next quarter. You need these people to do that and this is what they have to do and focus on)

Create an inbound motion for your services: Make sure to do a brilliant job for a founder and, as a result, make yourself obsolete by putting the right people and processes in place. This will make that founder refer you to more of his friends who have a great business, and/or it will be noticed by one of the investors in the company, who will keep you in mind for other portfolio companies. The latter can be a strong accelerator, especially when you start working with multiple start-ups/scale-ups who have a different investor base.

As a service provider, your key role is to communicate to your potential client how your presence on the project will add value and incrementally benefit the project. The more skills you develop and the deeper your network of other professionals is, the more value you bring with you. To build more skills, constantly update your knowledge and expertise. Write more, read more, talk to people more, and effectively become a dependable resource. However, most importantly, always ensure that the value you bring is what the client is looking for or needs. Be ethical and you will always be rewarded.
