Your client demands endless design revisions. How do you balance creativity with limited resources?
Clients may request endless revisions, but resource limitations needn't stifle creativity. Here's how to manage expectations and preserve your creative process:
- Establish a revision policy upfront, detailing the number of included revisions and associated costs for additional changes.
- Communicate regularly with the client, providing updates and managing their expectations throughout the design process.
- Suggest alternative solutions that align with your creative vision and the client's needs, finding a compromise that conserves resources.

Quite often people don't know what they want (or don't) until they see something tangible. It can help to present clients with a few different options at each stage. This keeps them engaged with the evolution of the project and helps them contribute to the design process in a controlled and manageable way. This helps to limit requested revisions and ultimately allows the studio/designer to deliver for the client in a more timely and cost effective manner.

I’d set clear revision limits upfront by explaining the impact of unlimited changes on quality and timelines. I’d work with the client to prioritize their main goals and refine feedback to align with those objectives. Offering a structured review process—like three rounds of revisions with specific checkpoints—keeps creativity flowing without overextending resources. Finally, I’d communicate the value of sticking to the plan, so they feel confident in the design choices we make together.

I think prevention is the best way. You should share your work process with client if it is possible, including sharing potential ideas, hand-drawn sketches, prototype version of work and ... In most occasions, clients don't know what they want until they see depicted ideas. So, we can present our ideas visually in order to reduce the number of revisions.
