Identifying the issue would require looking at the output (what is the exact issue) and linking it to the input ( the data set used to create the model in the first place). Typically, if the dataset used is not sufficient (having limited data to create or test the model, having limited time and therefore compromising on the data etc ) or is inaccurate (not in the right format etc ), it can lead to output quality or performance issues. Do not try for quick fixes when it comes to improving performance of the chatbot. Get the basics right.

This has to be the starting point before trying to make any optimizations - otherwise you're flying blind. Heatmaps, dropoff, CSAT surveys, NLU analysis are all great methods to identify issues. Are users consistently getting stuck in a certain flow? How can we make it easier. Does survey data point to a broader issue - what can we do to address it? Is my chatbot routing users to the wrong place, and can I use real user utterances to train and improve it?

Many chatbots today have been in use for many years and use super simple models for engaging with customers with little or no real AI or data used. Think beyond this - what is the real value that a chatbot will provide your customers? Do they really want one or are you doing it for purely internal purposes?

Make your chatbot specific - don't ask it to take any random question, give it a precise scope and make it an expert of this scope, then clearly inform the customer of the type of questions the bot can answer (when you set expectations, you can't disappoint) 2. When a bot doesn't understand the question, can't answer it, or simply when the customer ask for it, let the customer talk to a human! Better yet, setup a proper handover so the human would have the full context available when taking over, to avoid wasting everyone's time and energy.
