You're considering a career in entrepreneurship. How do you know if it's right for you?

Calling it a career in entrepreneurship means nothing, if anything it's an oxymoron as it's the opposite of a career. Whilst I undeniably have a track record of entrepreneurship I would never describe myself as one. Two main reasons: 1. It means nothing, I may as well say I'm a businessman which is equally vague 2. Most people who call themselves entrepreneurs are pretenders and dreamers (I'm UK based), some would use more offensive words, I may do on occasion. These people, or "wantrepeneurs", deter anybody who is genuinely entrepreneurial from using the label ...I'm also of the view it's generally inherent from a young age. People can become more entrepreneurial but that doesn't mean they are entrepreneurs

“Being your own boss” is among the fallacies of being an entrepreneur. Clients, customers have to be listened to or you will soon not have a business. For me the reason I do this is that I love to build from scratch, both the business and the product. It’s a journey like no other.

If you are prepared to work like crazy (24/7) on a business idea you know in your depths is worthy and at the same time be able to tolerate ( for an unknown amount of time) not successfully convincing the right set of people (with the right money terms or the right skill sets) that your business idea is worth a damn. There almost nothing in common with hard work for a company that pays you-- and the heartbreak of being an entrepreneur. That said, some folks are absolutely born for it. The rejection rolls off of them and they just shrug as investors don't "get it". I love these people. PS: Being an entrepreneur is NOT living off investors money for years not facing facts about your business...it's shameful. Don't be one of these people.

I think as you said the ‘no’s’ need to roll off you as smooth as butter. Be doggedly persistent to the point just before you are a pain in the ass. Use your money first. If you don’t, you might want to ask yourself how much do I really believe in this project? Get ready to not sleep for long periods at a time. Be the janitor, the CEO and everyone in between. Trust the process and remember to be kind to people

Understanding how your skill set and interests can give you a unique selling point when starting out is key. If you are wanting to start a business in a competitive market, you need to understand what makes your business different and what skills do you or your team need to bring the idea to life.

Skills can be learned, and continuous learning should be a mantra for any business owner. One of the reasons I enjoy entrepreneurship is because I am constantly learning and applying my knowledge in practice. Assessing your skills with a coach or mentor is important. Don't have one? Explore your local business support council to find someone who can help you assess your transferable skills. For me, it was surprising to discover that everything I learned in engineering, oil and gas projects, and health and safety could be applied to food production. Using the same framework made it easier to accelerate my business growth.

Business Model, Competitive Advantage, and Value Proposition: I have developed a viable business model that outlines how my venture will generate revenue and sustain growth over time.

Starting and growing a business begins with your passion and self-belief. Your drive is your golden ticket. Ensure you have a viable business model and a unique value proposition. Stay realistic about the risks and demands of entrepreneurship, and leverage your resources effectively.

Es complejo, porque a todo emprendimiento se le debe otorgar tiempo y, a veces, no se tiene mucho tiempo y la idea no madura. Hay que apoyarse en una red de colegas de confianza. El capital es un aspecto clave para no contraer deudas.

Time management would be number one. I've mentioned that entrepreneurship is a lifestyle—it's not for everyone. That's why living this lifestyle is important. It means you won't have a normal 9am-5pm routine like your colleagues. Dedicating time to study Lean Startup methodology would be essential and number one priority. Additionally, I found The Power MBA course very useful, unlike a traditional university MBA. The Power MBA offers a practical, bite-size learning program that you can start applying right away. You're outcome oriented, not status oriented. You find joy in accomplishing something that you set out to do, not something you'll be rewarded for. I've worked in startups for 12 years and this is one of the few truths that has remained constant.

Personally, my journey into entrepreneurship has been transformative. Despite running my own company as a contractor after leaving the big oil and gas projects, I always felt like I was working for someone else. After 17 years in that industry, I realized I wasn't truly living my life. I felt unfulfilled and out of place. Throughout adulthood, I faced various challenges, from giving up on my dreams to getting married and experiencing postnatal depression for six years without realizing it. My first startup was highly technical and complex, driven by my passion for a cause: cleaning water from nano and micro-plastics. However, I underestimated the complexity, requiring five years of research before achieving product-market fit. After working on it for five months with a team of five, including an analytical chemist CTO, I realised I lacked what it took to make it successful. Nevertheless, I continued experimenting. I asked myself how I could start a business with just £20 and found success with a simple project. Since moving to Glasgow in 2008, I had been making kimchi from my kitchen because I missed my dad's recipe and couldn't find any locally. It began as an experiment, driven by curiosity about its potential.

Self-belief propelled me into entrepreneurship's ambiguous realm. Disciplined and unfazed by uncertainty, I embraced ambitious goals. Failures were not setbacks but lessons, fueling my resilience. With a drive to succeed against all odds, I found my true calling. Self-confidence, focus, and a growth mindset - these defined my entrepreneurial journey and continue shaping my path.

One simple and straightforward way to know if your “entrepreneurial idea” is something you should pursue is to ask people! Yes. Never underestimate feedback as an entrepreneur. Share with your trusted friends, family or colleague what the overall idea of your intended business is. Most times, if it’s a great idea you’d get a thumbs up and their encouragement. Other times, they could help you see from a perspective you may not have considered which could be an added advantage for you. I understand that sometimes, some people may not understand your drive or passion, so don’t let people’s opinions hold you back but don’t take them for granted either. Good luck! 😊

You also need to ensure you have the stomach to handle daily uncertainty, wear multiple hats at once, take care of everyone's problems because you will be the escalation point for every person working with you

Entrepreneur is way deep word , which must simplify complexity through simple sops or approach. It's all about tough calls or timely updation of your growth. Choose the area , interest then craft a suitable business model to make it sustainable beyond challenges or competitions Have a great journey ahead.
