Prioritizing in data science is crucial to avoid overwhelm!! I deal with profiling SMS frauds, so mastering Natural Language Processing (NLP) is only essential. Using NLP techniques to detect fraudulent patterns in SMS content is more relevant to my work than diving deep into other concepts like image processing or computer vision. Just, by focusing on NLP, I can leverage NER to spot suspicious entities like unusual phone numbers or URLs & FastText to understand context & detect text anomalies. Instead of getting sidetracked by unrelated technologies, concentrating only on NLP tools allowed us to enhance fraud detection. This targeted approach ensures to stay up-to-date in my specific domain, making my work more impactful.

The first thing to do would be to identify the key skills and technologies which are relevant to what you are doing. Once you have identified them, MOOC, certifications or projects are the best way to learn and practice these skills. Practicing these skills is a crucial step toward mastering them. Making sure that you have taken notes or have stored key points about these new skills is important as well.

I’d always recommend to start with an application you are passionate about or is in line with your current professional goals - examples could include a recommender system or predictive model , a summarization task etc. Understand how you will evaluate quality (if you don’t have a handle on metrics make sure you understand those). Then play around using different techniques to solve a problem. Ideally use open source in this journey. It gives you the opportunity to go one level deeper and even modify the library and understand algorithms. Use online courses from top AI programs as a companion to learn in this journey.

Data Science is a skill that needs to be perfected day by day, if you are trying to master things all at once, you are trying to learn all the recipes around the world which doesn't help you and even confuse you. You have to narrow down your learning to a specific domain, algorithm, or use case. Knowing which problem you're solving is a big plus. let's say if you are in the banking domain, the most frequent problems that are solved might be regarding Fraud detection, Risk assessment, algorithmic trading, Personalization, etc. This helps in clarity in the thought process and a proper approach to tweak problems.

In Data Science, it's very important to learn incrementally—not by multithreading or multiprocessing. 😀 Start by mastering the fundamentals and thoroughly covering each topic. Once you have a solid foundation, you can take on multiple projects and expand your knowledge step by step. It depends on your career level. Here are the steps I take to decide on my incremental learning: Know your learning style: online, in-person, self-experiment. Learning by doing is a good approach. Take time off: Learning is a long-term investment and time-consuming. With overloaded information, you need time to make the investment decision on what topic brings you joy.
