You’re an educational leader who wants to improve your public speaking skills. What’s the best way to start?

Remember you are in charge. You are not trapped in there with them, they are trapped in there with you. Know your subject, take it slow, look at people one by one and tell them what you know.

On the interior: hold what you’re doing as an offering of what you have at this point in your understanding. Not like it’s the truth but and offering through your eyes for their benefit and the benefit of all This intentionally will come out in your tone and presence. And remember, it is a gift to be able to contribute by saying what you have to say. So enjoy the gift and have fun 🙏🏼😀

I cannot stress the power of video enough. Seeing yourself in action gives you an abundance of information from which to work and grow. Consider reflecting on it yourself and then bringing a trusted mentor into the reflection to get another's perspective. Ask yourself key questions like: do we "see" the same things? Do we agree on the starting point in terms of which skills to tackle first? Am I stronger in small or large group settings? What opportunities can I create for practice with "friendly" audiences? Don't be shy about leveraging technology here. Seek out AI platforms that will let you upload video and get analysis.

One of the ways that I improved my public speaking was by doing more of it. Presenting at conferences is one tried and true method that works. The other is I started offering multiple modalities to my team. If I am "passing the word" to my team why only send it in an email. I got into the practice of doing quick/short voice recordings which also makes me practice my speaking cadence, tone, condensing my language to key points. And it is pretty low stakes but it helped me to hear myself and become more comfortable with hearing myself. This led to more comfort with speaking in public. Now I don't think anything of it, I will get up and speak to thousands of people without a worry. Practice makes perfect!

One thing I've found helpful is to watch and listen to other accomplished speakers. Listening to their cadence and watching how they position themselves gives you an idea of how you would like to be seen and heard when speaking. Also, no one knows exactly what you plan to say, so don't worry if you forget something. Be familiar with your content so you can talk naturally about it.

These people act as mentors and they offer learning that you can't get from any book. Mentors that are experts in specific fields can allow you to broaden your professional network, get advice, and gain a deeper understanding of the nuance that only comes with experience.

Try Toastmasters International. They are everywhere and membership is very affordable. You will have an opportunity to practice in a supportive group and members will give you tips and feedback to improve.

The knowledge of the world is within your palm. There are so many great orators across the globe, with their interviews freely available on many of the free video platforms. Choose orators, whose style and purpose you align with. Watch them multiple times, and see what you like about them. Is it their way of speaking, or is it their content or how they use their body to emphasise or dramatize certain points, or how they include humour to break the monotony. Literally, watch and learn!

Sometimes we do not find people with experience to learn from, because we live in deprived places where there are not many sources on the Internet and YouTube, so my advice is to be creative , think outside the box in order to develop your character.

The best way to get better at public speaking is to speak publicly. Over. And over. And over again. The challenge most people have is they too narrowly define public speaking. Public speaking does not need to be to an audience of 50. It’s a toast at dinner. It’s gratitude to your spouse in front of your family. It’s speaking up at team meetings. The improvement comes from the reps, but here’s the most important part: Your growth is a manifestation of how well you reflect after each moment. To do that, answer these three questions: - Where did I communicate most clearly? Where didn’t I? - Where did I communicate most compellingly? Least compellingly? - What’s the one thing I can improve for next time?

We should effectively utilize from every opportunity starting from school, work, voluntary service, or any gathering to speak in front of a live audience. It should be purposeful and planned. I mean to have steps in mind i.e. purpose of the gathering, your topic for speaking, consideration of your audience, noting down key points you want to speak about, speak and then reflect about your experience. This should be done in a cyclic process identifying gaps and improving in the next opportunity. Generally, relevant poems, quotes and anecdotes should be included in your live speaking. This hugely impacts the way you convey the message to your audience.

The best practice happens in front of a live audience. Take every opportunity to speak in front of an audience. Practice, but don’t over prepare. Trying to memorize a presentation often means a stilted style and sometimes even freezing. Know your message so well that you feel confident delivering your message.

Of course in recent years we need to develop the complementary abilities to speak in person and online; it's a slightly different skill set. We can get immediate feedback and energy from a face-to-face group of listeners but online speaking, perhaps counterintuitively, provides more opportunities for feedback and interaction and incorporating listener thoughts and reactions than in person. So practice, practice, practice. But don't make the mistake of planning both forms of delivery the same way.

Next time when someone ask you to speak in front of others, just do it, take the opportunity! Practise make perfect! Or even better, don’t wait to be asked. Just volunteer and do it!

Always get feedback no matter how hard it might be to swallow; you can learn invaluable tips. When I did careers seminars I always had short feedback forms for invitees to fill. You learn what you did right- great motivation and you learn what you could improve upon. Sometimes you get a great insight to things you may have overlooked or not even considered. Nobody can be you and you can’t be anyone else so learn but always do it your way, the way you feel comfortable doing things

Learn how to effectively ask for and receive feedback from coworkers, customers, and your boss. Discover how to also give effective feedback to others. Here are some tips on how to ask for feedback in the right way:- 1.Be specific about what you want feedback on. Don't just ask for general feedback. 2.Be open to both positive and negative feedback. 3.Be respectful of the person giving you feedback. 4.Ask for specific examples. 5.Thank the person for their feedback.

Constructive feedback is an essential way to improving your skills. Being receptive and acting on constructive feedback will work wonders enhancing your skills. Of course reflecting is essential, but you also need outside input to improve.

One thing I benefited from in public speaking is recording myself. This is after I have internalized my entire message to only needing concise bullet points to drive the conversation. I dress up and pretend it is the live event. Once I'm finished delivering the speech and/or session, I playback the recording searching for opportunities to improve. If there is an evaluative rubric, try using this to gage where you are. Additionally, you can send the recording to a coach or mentor who can support you with feedback. The key to this is to take what constructive criticism can help you improve. Even if it is just 1 to 2 things to implement, take the time to practice it to perfection.

Take an acting class! It will help build your confidence in front of an audience, strengthen your vocal delivery, and make you more comfortable with a script.

Video record yourself. Observe how you deliver a point. Listen for verbal pauses: um, ah, you know. Listen to the clarity of your speech. Avoid overuse of clichés. May sure your topic is interesting. If so, explain why.

First, speak in front of smaller groups to have small wins. Then, find your "own" self, in other words your style, tone of voice, choice of words. Rehearse, watch some TED talks, do voice warm up exercises. Attend public speaking clubs. If possible "record" or "video" yourself and ask feedback from friends or peers.

The best way to learn to swim? Take the plunge! (with bodyguards around ofcourse!). Take the plunge, and challenge yourself by speaking more often in a gathering. It can be among your friends or it can be among your work colleagues. Read and watch content that is out of your comfort-zone, so that next time anyone speaks on any topic, you can interact with a valuable insight.

When I started in education I tried to emulate my mentor teacher with whom I student taught. She was very old school and very demanding of her students and I tried to be the same but after one grueling class session, one of my students approached me and said, "You know, Mr. F., we can learn just as much having fun as we can working hard." Because my background was in hands-on learning, I knew that student was right and decided that no matter what I was teaching, my students and I would have fun and in years of teaching International Baccalaureate French, 100% of my students easily passed the exam. When public speaking, I take the same approach: keep it hands-on, encourage participation, and have fun!

I think the best public speakers are the best storytellers! - start with thinking about what you want your audience to feel, what you want them to learn or leave with. - then think of a story from your work or life that paints a vivid picture for the listeners - practice telling this story (not writing down - since we write very differently than we speak) to make sure it is hitting all the important points and doing what you need it to do.

I also consulted with a public speaking coach. It was an amazing experience. I was able to gain feedback from a knowledgeable person who understood the science of engagement and capitivating an audience.

Always research thoroughly even if you are already an expert. Spend the time and make the effort. Everyone can learn something new and sometimes there may things you’ve overlooked or don’t even know. Be up to date in your knowledge, policies and ideologies may have changed Read and prepare your topics thoroughly and be objective when you are reading over your notes Be prepared for questions- this is where research and practice comes in handy Have fun, be sincere, relax, breath, smile and show your passion. I always get nervous speaking in front of anyone but trusting your knowledge and breathing helps

At the beginning of my journey to public speaking, I become more of a parrot than anything else. Those that inspired me, I wanted to emulate. Be mindful that the world doesn’t need “another whoever.” It requires your voice. Your voice (with practice, time, humility, and hard work) can make a difference for your audience. Be good with that!
