As a part of assessing the impact, is to understand the causes of the delay from the supplier and determine what actions need to be taken to help eliminate or minimize that impact. Most of the time, alternative solutions can be found to help resolve the issue (expedited freight, modified/deviated spec, etc.). Understanding the causal for the delay is a BIG factor in being able to mitigate it.

In my experience I have found it necessary to always build the possibility of supplier delays during the proposal process. Any product that is of vital importance to the build schedule and subsequently the completion of the project, is subject to penalties to the supplier. For every day late is a cost to the supplier, every day early is a percentage paid to the supplier based on the proposed agreement. In some instances, it may be necessary to have a secondary supplier vetted and ready to step in if the primary can’t meet their commitment. This will only work if the product delayed has many supplier sources. There are many verbals to this problem and it’s important to establish a robust delivery status process with all suppliers.
