You're facing tight manufacturing deadlines. How do you streamline PLC programming for maximum efficiency?

One of the most overlooked elements is the demolition of the original system. I am speaking strictly as a retrofit, the demolition and the care required to remove the old system, and the necessity to capture and document the missing information from the original design, even if the schematics exist. Based on experience, I suspect that there is a 25% deviation from the original design that has never been documented. We, as designers, are often motivated to write the code and get ahead, but contingency planning matters in optimization, especially if tight deadlines are involved.

Steps that have proven useful to me: 1. Thoroughly read and understand the process and its requirements of control. 2. Write steps for logic and identify crucial points in logic. 3. Map down all the I/Os before writing logic. 4. Try to make functional blocks for recurring logic steps to save time. 5. Use a simulator for testing logic before hand to avoid any unpredictable scenarios.

Always read THOROUGHLY through your schematics & drawings to ensure proper execution of the job being performed. There are always plenty of resources around your job area as well! Never be afraid to look for information & ask questions!

I am no expert, only using PLC's for home projects to get a better understanding of them & how they work. I mostly used esp boards & relays for Home Automation, but as long as you know what you are trying to accomplish & research the PLC that you want to use for your project, as well as the limitations of the program, you should be good. The only caveat I have found is the life of the board because of Monday or Friday production days.
