Setting goals and all that is important of course, but also I have found that sharing a bit of who you are personally helps you connect with dispersed teams. Also, I have found daily/weekly check-in meetings to be really helpful.

Listen, understand, think & talk. Keep repeating every day, week, month. Basically touch base by every medium regularly. Over the course of time, self accountability & mutual trust develops. Then reduce the frequency.

Communication do stands really important. Not just it helps in cross feedbacks but also give the team sense of direction and team. Most of the time many resources feel isolated or left out . Communication helps building a culture and get everyone combined as a team. Moreover, with increased video conferencing, the connection/bonds between team and resources gets stronger. This why it is very important to have great communication tools. The bigger the team, the more challenging it becomes. But yes, Platforms like Zoom, Teams, Google workspace helps tackle this challenge with ease.

Communication is a key driver for any team’s performance, more so, when team is remotely placed across geographies. With current virtual tools and technologies that can almost mimic f2f discussions, maintaining a regular communication is easy and feasible. One should look at a regular schedules for catch-ups, or updates, and project discussions. One size May no fit all here too! So look for what works with a particular team/member and adapt the mode accordingly. With multi-level teams, also ensure a proper line of command SPOCs for a systematic update. It is important that the team feels open and heard, and the channel to communicate with each other is well defined and accessible for the overall efficient functioning of a team!

The aim is to establish a regular interaction rhythm that keeps everyone aligned and accountable. For instance, if you manage a remote sales team, hold daily briefings to discuss targets and weekly one-on-ones to address individual concerns. This routine allows you to offer support, address issues, and celebrate achievements, enhancing team morale and collaboration. Regular check-ins help ensure everyone is on the same page, fostering a sense of unity and purpose in a remote setting. This practice keeps your team connected and motivated, driving overall productivity and success.

What I find to really work is having clear lines of communication with the senior team members in all the different locations. Regular site visits and daily check ins help the team feel supported. The ability to grow your teams skills and giving them the confidence to make decisions, helps ensure that work is done efficiently and effectively when you cannot find time to be involved

It's hard to be "face to face" check-ins, even in a virtual team. Information dissemination can be asynchronous, but make sure to schedule time for the team to have discussion about work and casual topics. Some of the approaches we take are: ice breakers during regular team meetings, team building and social events, and team member led office hours where topics can showcase their individual passions or just be a space for playing games and getting to know each other.

I had the chance to live this type of management. I was in Brazil and my team was all around LATAM. We usud to have a regular meeting every week to discuss the business, oportunities and share what happened in the last few days. And every once in a while we used to do in person meetings to spend a week together ans strenght the relationship.

Striking a balance between letting the team stay autonomous to still ensuring accountability can often be tricky….Assigning autonomy gradually, while still maintaining a regular check-ins and answerability will help you maintain an open and reliable team! Trust goes hand-in-hand with respect..so while all above is said, treating each member respectfully in their individual capacities will ensure a healthy, collaborative team!

Trust is best gained by having invested in an international experience and background yourself - something to focus on early on in your career. When setting your top-line, ensure to have that represented there as well. Also, trust is gained through a hands-off approach, with minimal but essential touch points through check-in, milestone reports or review meetings. Trust but verify somehow! Often we delegate or make assignment and let them run independently. Need to find a way to know progress without the impression that you don’t trust them.

Leading a global team spread across all time zones, I used to think "cultivating flexibility" meant being available at any timezone, at any time, for anyone on my team. I was very wrong 2 years of this led to burnout for myself and many members of my extended team. Today, I lead a fully remote team with different contractual working agreements (ex: full-time, contractors, performance-based, etc). To keep everyone collaborative while creating an inclusive, multi-generational workplace where everyone can do their best work, 3 things are critical for us: 1. Set clear, time-bound goals that are visible to everyone 2. Empower the team with processes and tools to work synchronously and asynchronously 3. Prioritize progress over perfection

Instigating a pairing system between branches has helped solidify the team and create reference points for those people that have become more knowledgeable in certain aspects of our workload. It always amazes me how quickly the team has bonded regardless of locations.

Managing different timezones can be a challenge, especially doing it from Europe with a team in Australia. Make sure leadership is visible for all these teams and visit often to establish common values and culture. The best way for these teams to work is to establish a high performance culture. Anything else is fairly hard to manage with great distances and time zones. Like a great man once said: “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself” - Henry Ford

Ensure there is a matched in work priorities as random challenges always pop up in any job. Crisis management without match priorities can lead to lack of progress or failure to met the goals…communication is again the key
