Many years ago I was stuck in a rut - not getting called for job interviews, despite applying to a lot of places. What was missing? The answer might surprise you - it wasn't the lack of experience or skills. The missing piece was personalisation. I was sending out generic resumes and cover letters, failing to tailor them to the specific roles and companies I was applying to. So, I decided to change my tactics. I started to research each company thoroughly, understand their mission, values, and the specific role I was applying for. My resumes and cover letters became targeted, speaking directly to the company's needs and how I could fulfil them. And guess what? The interview calls started coming in.

In guiding my clients through their job search journey, I emphasize the pivotal role of keywords. By tailoring their application materials with the right keywords, they enhance visibility to potential employers. One client seeking a marketing role meticulously analyzed job descriptions, recognizing that terms like "digital marketing," "SEO," and "content strategy" were recurrent. Leveraging tools like Google Trends, they fine-tuned their keyword selection, ensuring relevance and competitiveness. This strategic integration across their resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and portfolio significantly boosted their online presence and ultimately led to securing interviews. I've discovered a useful tip: create a Wordcloud using the job Position Description. This automatically highlights the key words for you. This means you should tailor your application to incorporate these key words or, in other words, the key attributes required for the role.

Keep in mind, the job application and interview process isn't about you; it's about showcasing your value in alignment with the needs and expectations of the potential employer. Tailoring applications and interviews to showcase not just your skills but also your understanding of the company's values, challenges, and future goals is crucial. Demonstrating how your unique strengths align with the company's needs adds a layer of sincerity, making you stand out in a competitive job market.

A way to optimize your LinkedIn profile so it's 'searchable' is to research job titles you want to be discovered for (for example, let's say Brand Marketing Manager) and search on google and Chatgpt (ideally version 4): "What are the responsibilities of a Brand Marketing Manager?" and using as many of these words in your profile.

Focus on finding hidden jobs. Learning to find positions that are direct on company websites may help your application be seen by hiring teams as their roles may have lower volume applications. You can find hidden jobs by: 1. Using Boolean searches online 2. Using a private browser where cookies won't impact your search results 3. Setting up skills on your LinkedIn Profile and learning how those skills impact your job application Most importantly, everyone's job search journey is different there is not one solution or hot tip that works universally for everyone. Ask for advice and chat about your job search techniques with other job seekers/coach/friends.

A common pitfall is the tendency to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to resumes and cover letters. A client, for instance, applied for multiple positions with the same generic application documents. I guided them to tailor each application meticulously. By analyzing job descriptions, they highlighted specific skills and experiences, aligning their qualifications with the role's requirements. The result? Keep getting application material especially your resume reviewed by multiple people - friends who work in the industry, recruiters, university career ed officers, employees in target companies, and continually improve it bit by bit. As far as possible, customise certain aspects of your resume for the company and team you’re applying to, change the order, highlight specific things.

I've found that job seekers I work with get 𝘧𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘳 interviews when they're pursuing multiple (and very different) roles at the same time. This means you need to reduce the noise, simplify, and create a succinct, clear narrative as to why you are a fit for your target role. Update your Headline, About, and Skills sections to focus on one target role, and highlight the contributions that are most relevant for your target role in your Experience section. Ditch the rest!

Your LI profile should be revisited at least every 6 months why? Because it is your social/professional passport. As tech evolves and we learn new skills, so should our profiles be updated. If you are never sure, reach out to those whose opinions you trust and who can give you open feedback on your profile. Remove jobs that are no longer part of your career (y'know back when you started as a cashier at McDonalds). Create value and be valuable.

Look to see if you have any connections at the company, and if so, send them a message with a soft ask about the company or job. 4. If you don't have any connections at the company yet, make some. Find 3-5 people who work in your targeted department or adjacent to your role. Make your name familiar! 5. Go to the company page posts and add a thoughtful comment to a recent post. Do this weekly. I would recommend either finding other groups of job seekers or creating your own group and inviting other job seekers. Through that community of support, you can help each other, share job leads, and engage in mock interview prep together.

For my coaching clients, we provide them a simple spreadsheet to track their job search activity. I ALWAYS did this in my job searching days. You need to track the company, job title, where you found the job, your contact person, and what stage(s) you advance to. As they say, knowledge is power, and tracking your activity and results will show you what is, and isn't, working in your job search. For example, are you getting lots of first round interviews but not second rounds? Tracking your results will tell you that.

Your resume may not have data and metrics. If you aren’t getting interviews, it may be because your resume needs some work. And if you haven’t already, start to track and measure results in your work that can add results to your resume.

Analogous to an attempt to bake a cake with no recipe. You are void of clarity, direction and measurements for success. A job search strategy first identifies specific criteria/priorities/interests - so that you are only seeking specific roles, companies, titles that align with what your core skills and accomplishments. Then it includes defining ways, other than easy-applying, to show your value to specific contacts at select companies where you want to work.
