You're preparing for a Management Consulting interview. How can you prepare for the most common questions?

Nothing helps with interviews jitters and nerves like preparation. There are a ton of videos (on places like YouTube and here) and apps (there is a McKinsey one, for instance), with examples of questions and cases, and answers. It is not so much about the specific answers -- it is about the approach, how you are able to coolly break down the larger problem, handle uncertainty and zero in at a general answer (which is all you usually have time for, anyway). Developing that muscle memory so that when the start describing the problem your brain detects the type of case it is -- it is super valuable and the confidence will show

Don’t try to solve the problem immediately. Ask lots of thoughtful questions to understand root causes. My list always included: -people -processes -technology -financials -facilities/locations -internal/external forces Once done, attacking the causes in a holistic manner becomes easier. As a recruiter, i never liked when the candidate would ask for five minutes of silence to gather their thoughts. So write down thoughts as you go. Also try to understand traditional problems in these categories in advance and adjust to the specific case. Lastly, there are no clients if the consultant does not ask for the business. So be sure to ask for the job and show your commitment to the hiring company’s success before you leave the room.

In management consulting interviews, mastering case studies is crucial. These cases test analytical and problem-solving skills across various business scenarios. What this can do is help prepare your brain to think with that problem-solver and analytical mindset. Regurgitating frameworks you learned in school may not apply if it's your first interview. Also, don't be afraid to ask for additional context if it will help structure your answer better. Asking the right questions is as important as giving the right answers.

The fit questions are about your resume and your education and career path being concise. Reflect on your journey, why did you take some decisions and tell it in a short, logic way so the hiring manager can follow your logic and understand what drives you and what brought you the interview.

Think about a management consulting interview. You need to determine what role they want to fill. If it is entry level it will be case based. If not, they will want to know your story and how your expertise fits their culture and job requirement. They will not want to know what you and everyone else learned in grad school. Determine the level of the job, the domain, industry, team management, project management, client management and rain making skills that are required. Build a set of questions and answers for each along with an example of what you did. Give them your story with relevant examples, that is what they really want.

I remember being asked in an interview as a graduate to estimate the number of holes-in-one achieved every day in the USA. Looking back a classic male-centric question as I knew nothing about golf! But it taught me to expect the unexpected and be prepared to walk step-by-step through solving a seemingly random challenge. Also useful to know some stats such as population sizes, distances. And if you ever get asked it’s apparently about 120 holes-in-one per day - and still only about 20 of those are by female players!

Practice mental math techniques to quickly and accurately perform calculations during case interviews. Brush up on basic arithmetic, percentages, and ratios to demonstrate your quantitative abilities under pressure.

I use lumosity to practice my math skills. There are a number of games in the math section that really help if you play them regularly, I usually play them every night. We’re going to bed.

"Signpost" your answers, meaning use clear language so the listener knows exactly where you are in your structure. For example, if you are making three points, state you have three points. Then say, "my first point is...my second point is...and my third point is..." After clearly stating each of the main points, then come back and fill in the details for each of the main points.

One of the most overlooked elements in interview communication is demonstrating the value you've delivered. Don't just talk about what you did, talk about the impact of what you did, talk about the outcomes. Too many people talk about their responsibilities rather than impact

The art of storytelling is one of the most powerful communication techniques in highlighting the successes you've shared in creating with previous clients. The element that most consultants get wrong is that they tell the story as if they are the hero, but here is the simple truth. Client's cannot identify with you if you're the hero, and telling stories of what you did, how you did it, simply just do not land with a client. When sharing stories of success to demonstrate capabilities or wins, tell the story from the customers perspective. e.g. "the client identified they needed", "the success they targeted was", and by extension, how they leveraged you to co-author the success.

Some good comments. I should add that you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. Review their on-line information, set up Google alerts. Do a SWOT analysis of their company vs competitors. Focus on what they say is their biggest problem, what they have tried to do to solve them, and relate with your skill sets how you can help. Be confident, and don't be shy about your accomplishments.

Understanding how to use an issue tree for structured problem solving is not only critical for the interview, but is also an invaluable day-to-day tool you will use throughout your career.

When answering any question in an interview it is imperative to connect with the interviewer. Failure to connect will disqualify you from consideration. When asked, discuss your process for conducting any consulting project. Process step one - gather the information required. Then the second step is to analyze that information. Finally the third and last step is to publish your findings with the proper documentation and support for your client. Explain the above with examples of successes and problem resolution. Conflict is usually because of people or processes. (Remember to connect to your interviewer) By presenting your process, success stories and explaining how you handle the bumps will illuminate your strengths.

In the end you want to tell a story about how your capability (defined as knowledge, skills and ability) fit what they want and need in their culture. Second and as important, what is the culture like and is it one you can excel in. While I cannot form these questions for you, simply list what you want or need in the consulting role and develop questions, answers and examples around each. Your “story” will be ready.

It is good to appear confident and optimist. You should not need to ask how it went -- you already know. So your final questions should convey that you expect to advance and are ready to discuss things like your fit with the culture, lifestyle/work balance issues and the like. It is good to ask the interviewer personal-adjacent questions: how and why they chose this company initially. How their first experiences/first year went. If it didn't go so well -- use the questions and comments to learn a bit more. Inquire as to how their first interviews went. Mention that the case wasn't your specific area of expertise and how they, in their initial interviews, would have tackled it
