You’re a product development leader. How do you balance short-term and long-term goals?

The best way to define short-term and long-term goals is to first identify the business problem you are trying to solve. As the business problem is identified, it is natural that the problem won't go away with one single solution, but till the product is in line with the business vision and strategy continuous development will take place to develop a holistic solution. As the dynamic elements of business change like consumer behavior, competition, and market expectation, a continuous battle to make business relevant will be there that will establish the goals and adjust them to make the establish market leadership

It is important to understand why a product needs to be developed, what problem it will be going to solve, and whether it will be used in a particular market segment. The vision is aspirational and needs to be defined clearly. The strategy is a logical time-bound plan to achieve the vision. The strategies could be short-term or long-term depending on the need. The strategies could be also changed based on market sentiments, competitor analysis, or technology advancement.

Equilibrar los objetivos a corto y largo plazo estan contenidos en una correcta Planificacion Estrategica,dicho equilibrio esta en el logro del Alinamiento Estrategico. Como lograr ese alineamiento estrategico me gusta desde la perspectiva de tres niveles empresariales, estrategicos ,tacticos y operativo........ cada nivel tendra su clasficacion y definicion de objetivos , concentrados en la presente pregunta a corto plazo deben ser objetivos incluidos en los de largo plazo,ayudando a dar visibilidad del tiempo a cumplir a traves de las actrividades y acciones planificadas........

Tener una visión te permite tener claridad sobre los problemas que se buscan solucionar en la industria o en la sociedad. Atacar un problema grande como la digitalización, salud digna, nuevos materiales, nuevos alimentos y similares, son problemas que se buscan resolver al largo plazo mediante pasos pequeños

Continuously communicate the alignment between short-term tasks and long-term goals to your team members. Reinforce the significance of each task in contributing to the larger vision. This clarity fosters a sense of purpose and motivation among team members, ensuring that everyone understands how their efforts contribute to the overarching objectives. Regularly revisit the connection between daily tasks and long-term goals during team meetings or one-on-one sessions to reinforce alignment and keep everyone focused on the bigger picture.

The strategy provides the direction. The roadmap provides the tactical plan, which needs to be broken down into short-term or long-term goals with appropriate prioritization. The goals need to be logical and achievable instead of hypothetical which would demotivate the team. The goal's success needs to be measured so that further goals can be planned and achieved to improve the success of implementation.

Any short-term task should be part of a long-term task, then there will be no need to balance. If this is not the case, then it does not matter what tools or techniques are used, since achieving it will still not lead you to the desired result.

The visibility of the common goal is important for all stakeholders. The stakeholders need to be educated to use a tool that displays the roadmap and backlog. The tool could be a source of truth for everyone. All required feedback and major issues could be logged and prioritized by the SME by aligning the business value. It creates transparency which everybody would like to have.

With product launches, the input of colleagues from various sides of the business is a critical element of success for the final outcome. Hearing all sides, identifying timelines and potential bottlenecks as early as possible is beneficial. Ensure all parties are aware of the “why” and vision behind the product and the impacts to the business. Keep the collaboration open and honest throughout the process. Lastly and importantly, when the product successfully launches, make sure to celebrate everyone’s collective success and chat on the high points and opportunities uncovered to make the next launch even better. Open and honest collaboration, knowledge sharing mapping, and pivoting as needed are recipes for success.

Algo que vale la pena añadir es la importancia de conocer la industria y entenderla, utilizar metodologías macros como las descritas pueden ser inútiles si no tienes información real y precisa sobre entornos sociales, tecnológicos, politicos y ambientales. Siempre recomiendo hacer estos ejercicios para determinar fortalezas, debilidades, oportunidades y amenazas con información verificables y no con hipótesis, de lo contrarios los planes de gestión de riesgo podrían quedar inutilizados

It is very important to review your plan and tweak if required, based on the learning, progress and change in market dynamics. In long term goals, some of the factors change over the period of time, you have to be vigilant and agile in terms of understanding the change in ecosystem and plan accordingly to achieve your goals successfully.

First you needs to priorities your long term and short term goal in such a way that you should give little more focus on long term goal and have deep understanding of futuristic changes for achieving ur long term goal .
