Good process innovation practice is self funding, results pay the next project. To get there you need to focus narrowly to well defined real business problems. Quite often we'll intending teams start from solution idea. In my innovation catalyst training one of key concepts was: fall in love with problem, not the solution. Once you know the real pain point, experiment with simple and fast solutions, measure the impact, choose best, implement, and repeat. Closed loop approach confirms benefits, and enables learning from misses. That is the way.

Organizations can adopt lean approaches to minimize waste and advance continuous improvement, use employee insights to drive process innovation, and take advantage of reasonably priced technologies. Working together with clients and partners can provide useful materials and concepts, and concentrating small-scale pilot initiatives on high-impact areas allows for controlled risk. In addition, major advancements can be achieved without a large financial outlay by fostering an inventive culture that rewards contributions and promotes original problem-solving.

This situation occurs in a large number of companies. These steps can be a useful guide. 1. Know the business and activities. 2. Identify critical processes and activities. 3. Are there no documented processes? Make a process diagram, use it as your guide. 4. Become an expert in lean activities. Reducing costs and waste is the mission. 5. Identify which activities can be automated with equipment, programming, open source tools and even spreadsheets and databases. 6. Design a tool that reduces time. You cannot always design a complete solution, but you can solve specific activities. 7. Think modularly to grow with in-house tools or existing solutions. 8. Become the implementation leader and be the continuous improvement cycle yourself.
