Too often we get caught up in the game of 'but output must be measurable ' even before we start and that restricts the range of strategic choices we have at our disposal. In my opinion, it should not be forgotten that strategic communication has a holistic structure. Within this holistic structure, a spiral structure that supports each step and harmonizes with the stages should be considered. Communication processes are based on the vision created by analyzing the current situation well and a fully assimilated culture. This ensures a clear articulation of strategy and strategic objectives. Therefore, measurement metrics for the process should be determined accordingly. Whether the goal is awareness, engagement, expansion or traffic to the site, a strategy that aligns with the dynamics of the organization should have metrics that serve common sense.

If you don’t define your objective, you will never succeed. You have to ask why constantly. An organization I’m associated with had a board member recently say we have to have a podcast like this other one. I’m not going to name the podcast. I said, why? He said because it’s really cool. To be really cool is not an objective in the business world. Having a solid, narrow objective is essential to defining your audience, your message and your medium. Defining your audience is crucial. You can have several audiences but they have to be defined and nurtured. You are better off with an audience you can manage than too broad an audience. But you also have to have a strategy to grow your audience.

Evaluate the quantity and quality of coverage your communications receive in the media. Calculate the return on investment (ROI) or cost per acquisition (CPA) to determine the efficiency of your communication strategies. Assess the effectiveness of your communication in reaching specific audiences.

At this stage, it is simple: if you do not have a measurable indicator, i.e. there is insufficient or unreliable data, the indicator is inappropriate and must be removed. And there are no exceptions.

There is no easy answer to this question. It takes time, energy, hopefully not too much money, but money. The web has made it much harder to do it. It’s based on email addresses and no real information. Unless the email address is Ilovepork@gmail.com you don’t know anything about them. Even then, if you’re not a bacon company you know nothing about them. If you’re doing petitions or surveys, make them specific. Ask the same people different questions. When you get the information though you need to have a way to catalog it. You need a good CRM program, which I might post about, Excel doesn’t cut it. Look at the web and see what major marketers are saying is the best practice.

Having been in this industry for 23 years I've found that communication practitioners are often too focused on data analysing how many have reads, or reactions their communications have had. Our focus must move to understand whether or not we've created meaning that will change behaviours. The focus must be on obtaining and finding metrics that provide us with insight into involvement and participation. There is no silver bullet - the intent behind each communiqué must be focussed on how we measure involvement and participation and not how we measure opens and interactions only, although these are obviously a good start it's not enough to demonstrate efficacy.

To borrow from a famous retailer of yesteryear: “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” The same, I think, can be said of strategic communications and public affairs. Well crafted messages sometimes land on deaf ears and, other times, a throwaway remark finds an engaged and willing audience. While trying to gauge impact is a noble and clever pursuit, sometimes we are unduly harsh on ourselves and place too much emphasis on numbers - over quality and outcomes.

To add few things I have learned the past year, Be a storyteller. As a communication expert, you will have a platform to give voice for many. Use it. Share opportunities. As much as you give voice to your audience opinions, struggles and actions, you also need to create a place of opportunity and solutions for them. ❤️

In my experience, even if you are basing your conclusions and lessons learnt on the data from the evaluation of the performance of your marketing campaign, some of the conclusions will be mere assumptions and that is completely fine. Making assumptions and testing them in real life is a very important element to continuously improve your communication tactics.

Strategic communication is the targeted act of trying to influence perceptions, attitudes and behaviors that align with your objectives. In a world where facts no longer change our minds, and where critical thinking is in short supply, strategic communications, and its cousin, thought leadership, can be challenging. In my experience, strategic communications has three key elements — 1. Know your endpoint (what you are trying to achieve and not trying to achieve) before you put pen to paper, 2. Know your audience, 3. Don’t overcomplicate your messaging. Oh, and failure to adapt to changing circumstances and poor timing of the release of your information will get you every time.
