One thing that I have found to be helpful is to look outside of your expertise into some other technologies and study how those technology groups have developed new ideas and products. One area that I have seen expand dramatically is in the combination of different technologies that are being grouped together in new and different ways. It is especially important to create and maintain new and diverse relationships in your field as well, as these relationships can also be the source of your biggest breakthroughs.

Venturing into biotech entrepreneurship, several skills are crucial for my success. A deep understanding of scientific research and technology is essential for innovation. Strategic thinking and business acumen help navigate market opportunities and manage resources effectively. Strong leadership skills are vital for building and guiding a talented team, while adaptability ensures we can pivot and respond to industry changes. Networking and relationship-building are key to forging partnerships and securing funding. Staying updated with regulatory requirements and industry trends is crucial. Most importantly, my passion to solve unmet needs drives me, turning my BCom and MBA background into a powerful tool for entrepreneurial success.

Venturing into biotech entrprenership requires not only a solid understanding of biology but also how this biology interacts with technology for a seamless customer experiences. Since biotech ventures often involve multi disciplinary approach including genomics, precision diagnosis, understanding of therapeutic area and so on, it will be important to interact with a strong peer network, keep yourself uptodate on latest trends and also continously keep in touch with the venture capital arms/ founders of other biotech firms and have a realistic business plan in mind. Also, in this age of generative AI, you should use tools to create a stronger Proof of Concepts and validate those with you trusted customers.

I find in the biotech industry that the founders are often engineers or trained in other technical professions, but they do not possess the experience or background to develop a business plan, understand market analysis, or be proficient in financial modeling. When cash flows are tight and the budget doesn't allow to hire for a full-time staff person to generate this type of information and provide it at a level that investors and lenders will accept, it is important to look for an experienced consultant that can join the team on a contract basis and provide this type of in-depth knowlege, and also keep the business working "smarter, not harder."

As a biotech professional, one needs to be an allrounder. What I mean to say is that one should have a thorough understanding of the marketing, also possess capability to develop business plans, have knowledge of the customers and adoption of technologies, understanding of intellectual property rights and ability to establish and network with investors, suppliers and partners. Your scientific knowledge is crucial but what is more important is ability to integrate this scientific knowledge with service mindset and create products with a stronger Return on Investment. Also, ability to speak at conferences and establish your thoughtleadership will be critical in earning trust with potential customers and partners.

The regulatory landscape is evolving constantly in the biotech with the introduction of new therapeutic areas and opening up of specialized markets. For e.g regulations such as MDR, IVDR, IDMP besides standard FDA regulationis and EMA regulations prove major hurdles in achieving faster Go to Market. Thus ability to understand these hurdles well in advances can help one avoid some expenses associated with compliance around data privacty, security, safety , efficacy and so on. Also regulatory guideline across different countries is evolving constantly resulting in biotech venture founders being caught unaware of new guidelines. It is always good to have one IP Lawyer or have a contract with legal firm to guide you and provide oversight.

Unfortunately, good ideas and even great products have been sidelined due to lack of skill in understanding and mastering the maze of regulations and approvals necessary to bring their product to market. The key to managing this process for a young team is to work a legal team that specializes in these type of applications and also for continuing to keep up with new regulations and changes, and this is the highest risk for the business and the finances and the experienced people to properly manage this risk should be the highest priority.

To excel in biotech, you need a blend of scientific knowledge and business know how, including mastery of life sciences and staying updated with industry trends. Business skills, market analysis, and understanding intellectual property are equally important. Adhering to regulatory guidelines from bodies like the FDA and EMA is crucial to avoid costly errors. Building a strong professional network and demonstrating effective leadership, adaptability, and resilience will help you navigate the industry's fast-paced and high-risk environment.

The most important way that I grew my business was by networking within and outside of my community and finding mentors that would make the right introductions at the right time for me. Being a woman entreepreneur starting out in the biotech industry was hard, but I was fortunate to have three key mentors who helped me get my first consulting contract, book my first international speaking engagement for a US government agency, and serve for 10 years as an appointed representative of a federal advisory committee. These types of experiences were vital for my reputation and my credibility in the industry, now and today.

As I have grown my company, I have learned that it is not about me, it is about my team. What I have learned to do to bring the most rapid growth for my company is to hire the best "unicorns" that I can find, give them the tools and resources to perform their jobs effectively, and challenge them every day to reach our collective dreams and goals. I don't want them to produce, I want them to feel frequent wins and have a strong desire to get those wins and that emotion again. We celebrate those wins with gusto, we work hard and challenge ourselves and each other by always keeping the customer in mind and bringing our best efforts to helping our customers succeed.
