Effective networking in a new city involves tapping into diverse circles beyond the professional sphere. Consider joining interest-based groups like a local runners' or sports club. Engaging in activities aligned with personal interests serves as a natural icebreaker, fostering connections that often evolve into a robust professional network within your field. The key lies in establishing initial connections based on shared hobbies, creating a genuine rapport that forms a strong foundation for lasting professional relationships.

Once You move to a New City, it is an opportunity to learn the new culture and give time to your self-development by meeting new people and volunteering for some social cause.

Find people to connect with by joining a group that matches your interests such as sports (rowing team, running group, etc.), church, philanthropic or volunteer activities. Also, make eye contact and say hi to people wherever you are. I met one of my dearest friends when I was new to town just by saying "Hi, I keep seeing you everywhere I go" - 30 years later, we live in different states, but still see each other at least once a year. We have also widened each other's networks over the years by including others in our outings, etc. As you build relationships, the professional connections happen as well.

Effective networking in a new city is definitely not an overnight job. Small , genuine steps need to be taken towards a bigger goal. One can start with their close referral circle if possible and eventually move to organised professional sites like Linkedin to test the water. Definitely the aim is to not be too ambitious with the number of people in network, but develop genuine contacts.

Just moved to a new city? This feels obvious but - update your location on your LinkedIn profile! This is often forgotten and, as a Recruiter, is one of the first things I filter in a search if the client is in a hybrid work setting.

If you're attending an event by yourself, look for easy targets - people standing by themselves. They're usually happy to have someone to talk to. They could be there by themself as well, or just waiting for someone else. Either way, not many people would prefer to stand alone in a crowded room. And you might just make a new friend.

As someone who's moved around a fair bit for work, my advice is to simply, get out there! It can be daunting at first, but I have found that by attending events of interest or joining clubs, sporting groups, or volunteer associations with an open mind about who you may meet, there is an opportunity in every group. If conversation seems natural with someone, be vulnerable and tell them "I've really enjoyed our conversation, would you be interested in meeting up for coffee or attending the next one of these events again?" Guaranteed there are other people just like you, seeking connection. Trust your gut on the vibes you get from others and don't be afraid to ask for their details to keep the conversation going.

This always helps me to increase network whenever I am in a new place. Attending events that is aligned with the business and personal preferences is a go for me. Don't be afraid to make acquaintances and ask people around.

Volunteering is a great way to meet others! Many networks have been established through school committees or sports groups. My only advice is to be aware of the politics! Oh my heavens- some community groups are more political than large for profit organizations….🤷♀️🤷♀️

Volunteering is a noble way to build that network in a new city. One should keep an eye on self commitment. What you do in your volunteer work will create an impression of what you do in your life, in your profession, in your relationships... Being honest and true to yourself is the best policy.

I recently did this. I started with an existing network. I made every conversation personal. Took each person for a coffee , shared my story and my intent. I followed up on each introduction. I kept my CV and bio updated and readily circulated it . I kept track of each connection, read up about them before meeting, tried to provide ideas for where I could be of service. I changed my perspective from what they could do for me to what I could do for their organization. I sent a thank you note to each person...always. At the end of the year I had made a list..it was close to 200 people that I had met or contacted in some way. I remembered all of them with an end of year note of gratitude and an update of where my path was leading me.

All suggestions are great. Joining a coworking space can cover a few bases, professionally and socially. Most coworking spaces have a variety of events and activities ranging from self-development, sports and social. Try to attend an event in each category to broaden your opportunities to make new connections. You might find a unique chance for work or a new workout buddy. Going to a physical location each day builds a routine, and you will certainly cross paths with others on a similar schedule in line for coffee or lunch, and you can connect more organically that way.

Joining a coworking space for networking may not be the priority. Instead, if you happen to need a work space and a separate office space is not viable then we should opt for a coworking space. And yes, we should leverage the coworking space to build the network at any given opportunity.

Leveraging your existing network is one of the best ways to grow a network in a new city. When I'm trying to grow my network in a new space or location, I first reach out to my friends who are connectors. By connectors, they are the people that seem to know people everywhere. You name a city, industry, or company, and they know someone there. The way I would approach them is to say I'm moving to X (city), and who do you know there that I should know?

Growing and deepening relationships in your new city open up opportunities and luck. Before I moved to Austin years ago, I tapped my university alumni network to connect with people who shared in common bond. I also shared my move with professional colleagues and they also offered introductions to connections in Austin. You can also expand your network with people in similar roles or sectors to learn more about city dynamics and influential people.

For me, this is the best way. A warm lead to someone is so much easier than a cold message or call. Also, think about how you can add value to them and do something about that. Being proactive and helping your new contacts will mean they are then willing to introduce you to their local contacts. It sounds obvious but so many people want something but don’t give anything…be someone people enjoy being around.

Absolutely leverage your existing contacts….they connected to you for a reason. Make use of the people you know and know you. Always great to get a referral or link to a friend of a friend.

After moving continents several times, I can strongly recommend: - learning the local language and speaking with loads of mistakes as you move along the learning journey, - have an open mind and heart: try to understand the local culture and people, - be curious, ask questions! - talk to strangers, - take up new hobbies, - try new things. Many of these I learned the hard way, by not doing and staying very lonely and misunderstood. Some of these I did and got shocked by the positive outcomes.

Personally I have always avoided to live in expat communities. Aim for an area where you are forced to blend in local communities. Your personal cultural diversity learning curve will be steep and so much more enjoyable. Learn the local language, observe, interact, listen and share. Having said that; there is a balance. You don’t want to find yourself isolated, disconnected or alienated from your own cultural background. Live local and stay tuned with your home base.

It is always a challenge to move to a new location though the people who do tend to get hired faster and are considered flexible. -Do your homework about your new location. -Before starting take your family for a short vacation to the new place. Happy family results less stress -Find a place to stay which is closer to work/school and your family is not dependent on you for daily tasks. -In case you are moving to a new country, do your research on best places for expats. - Use your moving to a different location as leverage with your employer.

If you are a parent, I would also recommend volunteering at your child's school. And community events with your new neighbors are not a bad idea either. Rather than focusing only on "professional" contacts, it is best to meet new people face-to-face regardless. I volunteered at my child's school when I changed countries. There, I was able to meet more parents at volunteering events who are from the tech sector. They gave me important insights about the job market and even referrals!

Two things I'd like to add he are local support and cultural sensitivity 1. Local support: Getting help from someone who is already residing in the new city you're moving to will be of great help. If you don't already know someone who resides in your new city, consider reaching out to a support group in advance (religious, social or other). 2. Cultural sensitivity: Learn a lot about the people and culture of your new city. Culture is diverse across the world and some gestures acceptable in some part of the world could be unpleasant in another part. By wearing respect on your sleeves, you'll hardly go wrong. However, pay attention to what's culturally acceptable or not in your new city and this will enhance your networking efforts.
