I would like to thank Ryan Braun, Jaymie Oehler, and Jesse Walters for their excellent and inspiring presentations to the ECE graduate and professional seminars yesterday. These ECE alumni shared their entrepreneurial journey from the The University of Iowa - College of Engineering to uAvionix Corporation - an industry leader in aviation communications, avionics, and uncrewed aerial systems. Their presentations explained how uAvionix successfully built and manages a distributed engineering team that has delivered groundbreaking aviation products while maintaining compliance with FAA certification requirements. Thank you, Thomas Casavant, for another great seminar and for inviting your former students back to campus to be an inspiration to our current students.

Together with uAvionix Corporation, AIRmarket is excited to deploy and test the Casia G hardware at our Flight Operations Center (FOC) adjacent to the Josephburg Airport (CFB6) environment. The Casia G is a 360 degree optical sensor, allowing the remote pilot in command to monitor the airspace without the use of a visual observer, supported by ADS-B tracking through FlightLine, as seen from our monitoring dashboard, https://lnkd.in/gu7ptf6x. AIRmarket has begun integrating this new capability into the Skylink RTM system and is extending our network of surveillance. This will enable us to support the Drone as a First Responder (DFR) use case for our iART Alliance partners. Many uAvionix customers with DFR operations such as police departments and fire departments in the USA have successfully obtained waivers to operate Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) within range of a Casia-G without the use of Visual Observers (VO), significantly enhancing their operational capacity while reducing costs. The iART is a Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN) funded initiative. AIRmarket’s SKYLINK RTM is powered by AstraUTM - a Thales Company. uAvionix is an iART Alliance member and part of the executive steering committee. #airmarket #bvlos #rpas #rtm

I joined with Lisa Ellman to co-author an op-ed on the importance of the Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) rulemaking moving forward with the publication of the draft rule. As we note, the rapid expansion of drone technology in sectors such as public safety, agriculture, infrastructure inspection, and delivery services has the potential to transform key areas of the economy and provide significant societal benefit, as we have witnessed most recently in the hurricane response efforts. Yet, there is a looming challenge that could slow this progress: the bureaucratic delay in proposing a rule to facilitate BVLOS drone operations. Safely enabling drones to fly beyond the direct visual line of sight of the operator facilitates more complex and cost-effective applications covering a greater distance and reaching a broader community. Issuing this proposed rule this year is critical for the growth and success of this budding industry in the United States. AUVSI — Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International & the Commercial Drone Alliance are working together to ensure this draft rule moves forward. The time to act is now. We call on federal agencies including the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration, as well as the The White House, to stay on course and deliver the draft BVLOS rule by the end of the year. INSIDE GNSS WEBINAR Wednesday, October 9, 2024 The FCC's announcement to open the 5030 to 5091 MHz C-Band for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) is a significant milestone for the UAS industry. This move provides licensed, protected spectrum for UAS Command and Control (C2), ensuring more reliable, interference-free communications compared to the unlicensed spectrum, which suffers from congestion. Join us for this important webinar to understand the impact on the UAS industry.
