Last week was World Mental Health Day, and so we chose to highlight how our mental well-being is deeply connected to the health of our planet. Here’s why: 1. Young people globally are facing a mental health crisis. Because the climate movement is mostly youth-led, this impacts our ability to combat climate change. 2. Climate Action can be empowering, but without the appropriate tools and communities of care, it can also lead to stress and burnout. 3. Extreme Weather makes it difficult to meet physical and emotional needs. It can also lead to grief, anxiety, and PTSD. 4. Climate change is a common cause of stress for young people. Difficult ‘climate emotions’ include anger, loneliness, powerlessness and guilt. 5. Being in nature can be an important tool to improve and maintain our mental health. Destruction of nature can lead to increased levels of detachment from it, and more mental health problems. 6. Both Climate Action and Climate Inaction can impact our relationships, for example, arguments around food or flying. This can leave young people feeling alienated, isolated and like we are the only ones who care. #WorldMentalHealthDay #HealthyMindHealthyPlanet #climateanxiety

📢 BREAKING - Citizen's victory in #Asia's first climate lawsuit! 🔎 Background - Initial petition filed by 19 youths in March 2020. It was later combined with three others holding the Korean government accountable for #climate inaction. - The plaintiffs include over 60 children, such as the world’s youngest plaintiff, a 20-week-old embryo nicknamed ‘Woodpecker’. ⚖ The Verdict Three months after the final public hearing on May 21st the verdict is out – with Article 8.1 of #SouthKorea's Carbon Neutrality Act #unanimously found #unconstitutional for violating citizen's basic rights for not setting any targets from 2031 to 2049. In 2019, the authors belonging to the Indigenous minority group of the Torres Strait Islands in Australia submitted a communication to the United Nations Human Rights Committee #UNHRC that the Government of Australia had violated their #ICCPR human rights to life, private life, family, home and culture by failing to implement adequate mitigation and adaptation measures to prevent negative climate change impacts on the authors and the Islands where they live. In a landmark decision, the United Nations Human Rights Committee held that the Australian Government had violated the Torres Strait Islander's fundamental human rights by failing to adequately mitigate and address climate change. #IndigenousPeople #Climatechange. 🍳🌍 Committed to clean cooking! At the #CleanCookingSummit organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), we announced our ambition of giving 100 million people in Africa & India access to #cleancooking by 2030. 📊 According to the IEA, more than 2.3 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean cooking solutions & still cook their meals on traditional stoves using wood & charcoal. By developing access to clean cooking, we aim to have a positive impact on the environment & on people’s health, while also helping to reduce #genderinequalities in these regions. The recent long rainy season in April-May led to devastating floods across Kenya, impacting numerous communities. In response, the CIFOR-ICRAF family came together to support those in need. Our staff rallied to contribute over 1 million Kenyan Shillings (KES 1,110,575.00) to aid flood-affected families. This generous donation was distributed to 180 households in Makueni, Kiambu, and Homa Bay Counties through the Kenya Red Cross: 💚 Makueni County: 60 households in Ukia and Nziu on July 24, 2024 💚 Kiambu County: 60 households in Ting'ang'a on July 24, 2024 💚 Homa Bay County: 60 households in Suba South-Sindo on July 26, 2024 The support was met with immense gratitude from the recipients and their communities. The county governments of Kiambu, Makueni, and Homa Bay have also expressed their thanks for our contribution. In addition to the relief efforts, CIFOR-ICRAF is working with local governments and communities to increase tree cover in these regions. Trees play a crucial role in preventing floods and mitigating their impact. #Trees4Resilience
