As a result of President Donald Trump’s efforts to significantly restrict immigration, people in fear of deportation may avoid hospitals when they face pregnancy complications, or they may attempt to move to another state with protections for reproductive care, which could further put them in the crosshairs of immigration or law enforcement officials.

Professional women’s tennis will now offer its athletes robust family planning benefits — including up to 12 months of parental leave — the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced Wednesday. More than 300 players are eligible for the new benefits, sponsored by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. The WTA’s season-ending finals are held in Saudi Arabia. According to a news release from the WTA, the new program, which will include fertility treatments as well, aims to address key challenges faced by athletes. WTA CEO Portia Archer said in a statement that it can be challenging to balance the demands of a professional tennis career and those of family life. “For some time, we have been exploring how we can increase our support for players to help them become parents at a time of their choice,” Archer said. “This initiative will provide the current and next generation of players the support and flexibility to explore family life, in whatever form they choose.” A handful of women’s tennis stars have had to strike the balance between starting families and returning to the court, including Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams, whose postpartum absence from the sport spurred the WTA to revise its ranking policy to not penalize players for taking parental leave. Wednesday’s announcement also comes as women’s sports broadly grapple with accessibility and parental needs. The Paris Olympics Games in 2024 hosted a nursery for athletes’ children. The WNBA offers full parental leave, part of a 2020 deal struck between athletes and the league that also included a child care stipend of $5,000. The collective bargaining agreement with the National Women’s Soccer League also offers some pregnancy and parental leave benefits. ✍️: Kate Sosin 📸: Chris Symes/Photosport via AP
