Merci beaucoup! Residents of Ville de Jublains, France unveiled a memorial to six Brave Rifles Troopers who gave their lives liberating the town eighty years ago. Two residents present relayed stories from first-hand witness of the battle. This was the Regiment’s first contact in WWII after arriving from England days before. From the Mayenne-WW2 Association: “In the final phases of the Battle of Normandy, a fight was strongly opposed by the German army, who resolutely held the village. The village of Jublains, located on a height, had been chosen as a point of defense facing the south by the German army in cover of the counter-attack at the height of Mortain. Mined dams were placed on the road of Montsûrs and the road of Evron, covered by machine gun groups, while cannons were being installed in the center of the town. A US reconnaissance squadron, reinforced by medium tanks of the 3rd US Cavalry Regiment intervened from the road to Montsúrs, and collided at first on the dams. In a second half, an armored advancement allowed it to reach the central intersection of the village, where a duel opposed German tanks and cannon, destroying the head tank.” 2nd Infantry Division - Korea 1st Cavalry Division, U.S. Army
