Integrating Network Digital Twinning into Future AI-based 6G Systems
About us
The overarching objective of 6G-TWIN is to provide the foundation for the design, implementation and validation of an AI-native reference architecture for 6G systems that incorporates Network Digital Twins (NDT) as a core mechanism for the end-to-end, real- time optimisation, management and control of highly dynamic and complex network scenarios. To achieve this objective, 6G-TWIN will deliver methods, modelling and simulation solutions for the definition, creation and management of multi-layered virtual representations of future 6G systems, where heterogeneous domains (i.e., edge, fog and cloud) and communication technologies (e.g., cellular, optical and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN)) coexist. The project solutions will be demonstrated in two complementary use cases addressing mobility and energy-efficiency challenges, aligned with the expected use cases of 6G and the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) defined in previously funded projects (including SNS JU STREAM-C/D-2022). Finally, the participation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) will ensure that the 6G-TWIN consortium pays particular attention to the replication, reengineering and exploitation of the project outcomes, regularly aligning the requirements of standardisation bodies with predicted market needs.

👏 Ayat Zaki Hindi from Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) presented our latest scientific publication “Network Digital Twins for 6G: Defining Data Taxonomy and Data Models” at IEEE CSCN 2024 in Belgrade 🇷🇸 As the telecommunications industry moves towards 6G, Network Digital Twins (NDTs) have emerged as a useful means for real-time monitoring, automation, and performance optimization in next-generation networks. This paper contributes to the ongoing research on NDTs within the framework of the 6G-TWIN project by presenting a comprehensive vision for NDT architecture and establishing baseline definitions for NDT data models, i.e., basic and functional models. Ayat Zaki Hindi and Chris Murphy represented 6G-TWIN when they spoke on a panel on the emergence of AI/ML in Standards along with Jim Lansford, Rui Luís Aguiar and Aryan Kaushik at IEEE CSCN in Belgrade on Wednesday 27 November 2024. Chris traced the interest in AI and ML in standards and industry bodies over the last few years through to today where digital twin underpinned by ML is emerging as a key enabler for communication. He also outlined the problems arising from data sensitivity leading to barriers to adoption of the technology. He mentioned the work being done in projects such as 6G-TWIN and in industry bodies such as Telecom Infra Project and AI-RAN Alliance to overcome these problems by bringing together operators, vendors and academia. Ayat followed on with a detailed overview of the 6G-TWIN project, the work done so far and how the various objectives fit together to deliver a step forward in the state-of-the-art. #IEEE #CSCN 2024 I have just left the #IEEE #Conference on #Standards for #Communications and #Networking, organized in Belgrade, where I met an engaging audience. Many thanks for Prof. Periklis Chatzimisios and all the team for the organization. I had the opportunity to present two of our works ("Predictive Analysis as an Efficiency Enabler for Network and Service Management", and "An Automated Testing and Orchestration Framework for Softwarized 5G and B5G Network Applications") and participated in the insightful panel on "Emergence of AI/ML in Standards – Where are we and where are we going?", chaired by Jim Lansford, and with the participation of Aryan Kaushik, Ayat Zaki Hindi and Chris Murphy. I also opened the special session on Unlocking 5G-Advanced and 6G for Verticals Through Service Based Architecture, Network Exposure and Beyond, organized under the framework of #NetworldEurope by Maziar Nekovee and Xueli An. Quite busy days!
