In 2024 we were proud to expand our relationship with JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration - they made an investment into our Calcite direct air capture (DAC) technology. This funding will support a planned Calcite pilot project as well as Project Cardinal, the technology's first commercial-scale deployment. Stay tuned for updates on Calcite’s journey from the lab to commercial-scale in 2025. 📸 Executives from JX were on-site during Gastech for a signing ceremony with CEO Christopher Richardson.

As the year winds down, let’s take a look back at some 8 Rivers news and activity you may have missed! Back in January we announced the development of the Cormorant Clean Energy Project, an ultra-low-carbon ammonia production facility featuring the first-ever commercial deployment of 8RH2. Learn more about the project and its impact ⤵️
📣Exciting news!🎉 We are proud to announce the launch of Cormorant Clean Energy, an ultra-low-carbon ammonia production facility in Port Arthur, TX. This project is the first commercial deployment of our 8RH2 ultra-low-carbon hydrogen technology. The site will: 💪Produce ~880,000 tonnes of ammonia each year 🔒Capture >1.4MM tonnes of CO2 annually 💲Bring $1B in investments to the U.S. Gulf Coast region 📈Accelerate the growth of ammonia as a clean fuel alternative Cormorant couples technology innovation with industry-proven process equipment, establishing an efficient and affordable path for hard-to-abate industries like shipping, heavy transportation, aviation, and power generation to decarbonize by using ultra-low-carbon ammonia in their processes. We can’t wait to bring Cormorant online and pave the way for industrial decarbonization in the Gulf region and beyond! 8RH2 is a transformative hydrogen production technology that’s poised to help meet global demand for affordable, ultra-low-carbon energy. How does the platform achieve high efficiency, low costs, and ultra-low emissions? It combines the power of oxy-combustion with a system designed to inherently capture and recycle tail gas as a source of fuel. This innovative design makes our reforming process able to achieve maximum efficiency and ultra-low carbon intensity. Watch for a closer look at the process 👇

Reaching the scale of carbon removal required to support global industrial decarbonization and mitigate the impacts of climate change is an ambitious undertaking but not an impossible one, as researchers at RMI point out in a recent report. It’s essential that we invest in efficient and affordable carbon removal and direct air capture technologies - like 8 Rivers’ Calcite platform! - in the near-term to reach long-term decarbonization goals. West Virginia may soon become the fourth U.S. state to be granted a “primacy” designation for Class VI wells. The EPA is currently considering a decision that would allow the state to issue permits for wells that store carbon dioxide underground. Removing bottlenecks and speeding up project permitting decisions for Class IV wells will empower states and communities to bring more clean energy technologies - including carbon capture and direct air capture - online swiftly and safely. This is a critical step to moving the energy transition forward at the speed and scale our global climate goals require. Read more about this decision in West Virginia in E&E News.

This year’s International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Investment report held promising news for the growth of the clean energy industry: total energy investment worldwide is expected to exceed $3 trillion in 2024 for the first time. An estimated $2T of that will go to renewables, low-emission fuels, storage, and grids. 8 Rivers understands the positive impact direct investments into emerging clean energy technologies can have on project development. As we look ahead to 2025, we’re proud to be working with partners like JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration and Siemens Energy to advance ultra-low-carbon power and carbon capture technologies.
