"Medical debt isn’t just a financial burden—it impacts the mental and physical well-being of patients and their families," says Dr. Kelsey Chalmers, Scholar in Residence for AcademyHealth and ABIM Foundation's Advancing Trust: A Focus on Medical Debt initiative. "Only through collaboration can we drive meaningful policy change," adds Dr. Eva Marie Stahl. As Scholars in Residence, Drs. Chalmers and Stahl will play a key role in shaping our work on medical debt policies and practices. Read more in our announcement: https://lnkd.in/eDhvp237

While professionalism in health care typically refers to the rights, duties, and obligations of individuals, there's no widely accepted definition of “organizational professionalism.” A new study from Cambridge University Press is the first to explore this concept among health system leaders. The research delves into how leaders understand organizational professionalism, measure performance, and build trust within their organizations. https://lnkd.in/eS2UdAFv Julie Agris Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH Krista Emma, MBA, PMP Ahmed Alaskar Rich Frankel Blair Buder University of Cambridge

Justice and equity do not come because they are convenient or easy. They are always hard-fought journeys that require us to change our own stances and structures to change the world. In a moment when so much power is being wielded to rollback programs and policies aimed at advancing racial justice, WE in the World, supported by RWJF, and in partnership with NEJM Catalyst, are honored to sponsor a special issue to celebrate and learn from these hard-fought journeys. Going beyond rhetoric, this special issue is an invitation to share articles and case studies about how your health system is addressing structural racism in practical ways. What practical processes are you applying this to? How can your journeys help us to either: 1) measure racism and be accountable for improving it together with communities? 2) eliminate racialized diagnostics and algorithms? In this moment, remember that the act of building just, accessible, equitable health systems that create healing for everyone is fundamental to what it means to be a health professional. #Together, we can #JUSTICESQUARED IHI Ronald W. NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery invites manuscripts to be considered for inclusion in an upcoming theme issue on addressing structural racism in health care. Structural racism operates throughout health care — yet is often hard to see and work on. Over the past 5 years, many leaders and changemakers in health care and public health have become aware of the extent to which their own diagnostics, policies, algorithms, and practices are leading to unequal outcomes and have begun taking bold steps forward in addressing these issues. This special issue call for papers seeks out innovations in health care operations and clinical delivery that: (1) make policies and practices that are leading to racist outcomes visible and accountable; and (2) correct inequities in operational and clinical diagnostics, processes, and algorithms. This could include accounts of operational practices (e.g., medical debt collection, purchasing practices) and clinical practices (e.g., removal of race-based diagnostics in kidney transplantation). In keeping with our emphasis on practical innovations in care delivery, we seek papers that demonstrate impact for patients, populations, and communities experiencing health inequities and show ways to measure a shift in health care operations and practice.
