Able SC is a disability-led organization transforming systems, communities, and individuals.

About us

Able SC is a disability-led organization seeking transformational changes in systems, communities, and individuals. Since 1994, we’ve remained a consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability nonprofit that seeks to make South Carolina a national model of equity and inclusion for all people with disabilities. We are the state’s oldest and largest federally recognized disability-led organization. More than 3/4 of our staff are people with disabilities, as are over half of our Board of Directors. We practice coequality, disability justice and representation, and true inclusion through consumer-driven independence and disability pride. We didn’t just learn this. As people with disabilities, our work doesn’t end when we leave the office. Disability is part of who we are. We live this every day.

Achievable: Miranda’s journey began when she first walked into Able South Carolina as a shy and quiet person, unsure of how to stand up for herself or connect with others. She often avoided making eye contact—not because of her disability but because of the shame she felt about who she was. However, with strong determination and the loving support of our programs, Miranda started to grow in ways she never thought possible. She dedicated herself to finding effective ways to share her thoughts and ideas, and she learned how to use Assistive Technology to improve her communication. By participating in our Community Leadership Academy, Miranda not only learned to advocate for herself but also encouraged her mother to join her on this journey. Today, she confidently expresses her needs at doctor's visits, takes charge during peer meetings, and proudly champions her own goals. Miranda now shines with a strong sense of pride in her disability, and her unwavering spirit is making a meaningful impact in her community. Nothing can stop her now. Stories like Miranda's, this year's winner of our Able SC Taylor Burch Achievable Award, are possible because of supporters like you. Your gifts support our programs that helped Miranda, Just Imagine, what she could achieve. Stay tuned on Giving Tuesday next week when we will share a video detailing Miranda's story, and that of another disabled recipient of our services. Show your support for Able SC, and make a gift on Giving Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024. It's Wednesday's 6 years at Able SC! Wednesday is an Advocacy and Independent Living Program Assistant, providing much-needed help to these teams. As a proud disabled person with Autism, ADHD, EDS, and a psychiatric disability, their expertise is personal. Wednesday is passionate about access to quality healthcare and accessible health information. We asked them about a proud moment for them as an Able SC employee, "Getting a hi-five from an excited little Black girl who told me she had ADHD too after I ran a session at a children's summer program. I was happy for her to have disability pride and to be there to help her feel seen and heard. Fun fact about Wednesday: they adore Star Trek, run an online group, and cosplay their favorite characters. We asked what keeps them coming back to work each day, "Supporting other disabled people in reaching their goals and defining their own lives. I love when I help someone realize that a good life, as themselves, is possible and attainable." #DisabiltyEmployment #WorkAnniversary #Celebrate [Graphic with light blue background and photos of Wednesday, a Black woman with short twisted Black hair, smiling. Recently our Work Incentives Planning and Assistance team had a fantastic turnout of professionals and individuals with disabilities for the Benefits Workshop at the Columbia SC Works office! During the workshop, Community Work Incentives Coordinators Julia Hartman & Brittany Terry discussed the common myths and the facts about working while receiving Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income. [Photo of Julia, a white woman in a wheelchair, and partners presenting, with Brittany, a white woman seated in front of a laptop, operating the presentation screen.
