Researchers from the Bia-Echo Asia Centre for Reproductive Longevity and Equality (ACRLE), based at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the Mechanobiology Institute (MBI) at NUS, have developed an innovative technique that significantly enhances the reproductive potential of aged oocytes, or immature egg cells. This breakthrough could pave the way for improved outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies, such as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), for older women. Dr Zhongwei Huang, Deputy Director of ACRLE, said of the findings: “Our published work presents compelling proof-of-concept demonstrating that the microenvironment in which an egg grows and develops is significantly influenced by unique biological factors. Utilising optimised and healthy supporting cells to improve oocyte quality not only mitigates the adverse effects of maternal ageing but also improves the overall quality of all oocytes. This advancement is crucial as it empowers women to maintain optimal reproductive health regardless of whether they choose to conceive later in life. The implications of this research and the work we do at the ACRLE could redefine fertility preservation strategies, providing women with greater control over their reproductive timelines while ensuring healthier outcomes for future generations.” The full study and its findings, funded by ACRLE and National Research Foundation, was published in Nature Aging on 9 September 2024.
