End cancer as we know it, for everyone.
About us
The American Cancer Society is the leading cancer-fighting organization with a vision of ending cancer as we know it, for everyone. We are the only organization working to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer. * Research – ACS is the largest, non-government funder of cancer research in the United States. Since 1946, we have invested over $4.9 billion in research related to cancer detection, prevention, and treatments. Currently, here in Pennsylvania, we are funding roughly 49 grants totaling more than $30 million. * Education – We work to educate the public on ways in which to lower cancer risks, as well as on the advantages of early detection. * Advocacy – Through our affiliate organization, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, we work with our elected officials to ensure that people have a voice on matters related to cancer and health equity. * Patient Services - Our 24/7 hotline (800-227-2345) provides answers and resources to anyone seeking cancer information, and our Reach to Recovery program provides breast cancer patients with one-on-one peer support from breast cancer survivors. Although currently paused due to the coronavirus, some other programs include our Road to Recovery program, which offers rides to treatments for those who have no other form of transportation, and our Hope Lodge Program, which provides a free place to stay in select areas of the country for those who need to travel a far distance to receive their treatment.

“I was under the impression that there are not many opportunities in this world where one can directly make such positive impacts on human lives so instantly, until I joined the American Cancer Society's Road To Recovery program,” noted volunteer driver Aidan Knorr. Transportation barriers are the number one reason for missed cancer appointments. Driving patients to lifesaving treatment is one of the most meaningful volunteer experiences you can have with the American Cancer Society. Aidan added, “The compassion I developed from listening to the stories of the patients I have driven, followed by the fulfillment in my soul from witnessing these individuals heal, are feelings that I will never forget.” Make a difference in your community tomorrow by becoming a volunteer Road To Recovery driver today.
