Home-based care organizations saw a 10.5% customer increase on average last year, surpassing the mere 4.4% growth seen in 2022. 👉 Customer growth rate hasn’t been this high in almost a decade. 🤯 What are providers doing differently? To create the 2024 Activated Insights Benchmarking Report, we surveyed over 1,100 home-based care providers and find out exactly what is and isn’t working in their business operations: 📈 Trend #1: Providers with the highest customer retention are prioritizing the satisfaction of their customers' loved ones. The average customer length of service increased by two months while the median customer lifetime value rose by $1,465 in the last year, the highest it’s been in four years. As 57% of customers come from family-requested care, it’s no wonder why providers who involve families in their customer’s care plans are seeing the highest customer satisfaction and retention rates. 📉 Trend #2: Only 1 in 4 home-based care providers have the data to prove their quality care outcomes. While the average hospital admission rate for home-based care in 2023 was 4%, only 24.1% of home-based care providers tracked their hospital admission rates last year. That means, 3/4 of providers are not capitalizing on proving this level of quality care. Not to mention, communicating the value of long-term and post-acute care industry as a service. 📈 Trend #3: Despite a record-breaking staff turnover rate, providers with a strong reputation are turning away less cases due to staff shortage. Despite the industry’s average care staff turnover rate reaching nearly 80%, there was a 16% decrease in those who had to turn down cases due to the staffing shortage compared to 2022. Which means, providers are getting creative in keeping their customers around. As almost 1/3 of total revenue is generated from the opinions of your customers and employees, managing your reputation has never been more important. According to our data, home care and senior living marketing ranked as one of the top searched phrases in the INDUSTRY. Fact: Most post-acute care providers are having to do their marketing all by themselves, or within their office staff. To make it easier on you, here are the 6 foundational pillars of post-acute care marketing to help you get your marketing plan started on a sturdy foundation, in half the time. 🏛️ 👉 1. Create a brand people can connect with The 5 essential key elements have a strong brand are: identity, personality, positioning, promise, & experience. Begin defining your brand by writing a strong mission (who you are now today) and vision statement (where you want to be tomorrow). 👉 2. Spread the word to where your audience is Word of mouth referrals continues to rank the top marketing source for providers in the post-acute care industry. The trick to successful business promotion is to know your audience, consider your goals & budget, and continue to test/analyze if your message is getting to the right people. 👉 3. Create a social media presence (start on one platform only!) Begin by taking a look at how your competitor's are engaging on social media. How often are they posting? What kind of content are the posting? Are there any gaps your profile could fill? 👉 4. Mingle at post-acute care events Event marketing can be a powerful tool for engaging with your community, driving foot traffic, and fostering meaningful connections. Try hosting senior health and wellness workshops, community open houses and facility tours, and senior social events and activities. 👉 5. Optimize your site for SEO to get seen where everyone is looking SEO encompasses a range of tactics aimed at increasing online visibility, driving targeted traffic to the site, attracting qualified leads, and ultimately, achieving your digital marketing objectives. 👉 6. Manage your reputation & get recognized in the industry Effective reputation management requires a proactive approach to building and strengthening your company’s reputation. Annual care staff turnover is the highest it's been in five years, reaching a staggering 80%, according to the 2024 Activated Insights Benchmarking Report. Based on the performance of over 1,000 providers in the industry, here are 3 data-driven strategies to start reversing that number: 💡 1. Pay attention to your referrals. Although Indeed continues to be the most popular recruitment source, it produces the highest turnover rate of 88%, ultimately producing a short-lived “quick win” for recruitment numbers but a devastating retention rate. Instead, prioritize word-of-mouth referrals which produce the lowest employee turnover rate for almost the least in acquisition cost. 💡 2. Get proactive about retaining the staff you do have. In 2023, providers who paid their staff above the 75th percentile saw a 35.5% decrease in turnover rate. What does your staff need to stay? Take a proactive approach to retention by surveying your customers and staff to uncover what they wish you’d start or stop doing to keep them around. 💡 3. Focus on building relationships between care staff and customers. Customers ranked the ability of their care professionals as their highest satisfaction score while employees are most satisfied with the client to care professional compatibility. As a result, revenue per care employee increased by $1,000 per care employee with an 18% decrease in providers who had to consistently turn down customer cases due to staff shortage. Retain staff by capitalizing what makes the long-term and post-acute care industry different from other jobs on the market: a fulfilling career.
