We are partnering with Kupona Foundation to support reproductive healthcare in Tanzania. 🌎 In 2023, Kupona and their partner organization CCBRT conducted 482 fistula surgeries—each one costing $2,100, covering surgery and follow-up care.
*An obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury that occurs when prolonged labor creates a hole between the birth canal and bladder or rectum, leading to incontinence. In addition to the extreme physical and emotional pain and often losing their baby, these women are frequently ostracized from their communities.*
What $2,100 Covers 💚
The $2,100 includes transportation (to and from), the surgery, a two-week stay after surgery, sewing/crochet classes, activities for women, as well as room and board.
Meals and lodging are provided for fistula patients and other subsidized individuals during their two-week stay. During this time, patients participate in activities such as group singing, basic sewing, and psychosocial support groups, fostering connections among the women through shared experiences.
For sewing and crocheting, there is a collaboration with The Mabinti Centre, which empowers women by offering entrepreneurial training and vocational skills, helping them start businesses and generate income.
