Bill framed as third round of hurricane relief to western North Carolina would grab duties from newly elected state officeholders. Executive director Marcus Bass stated, "There is no room to play with the disaster that's happening in western North Carolina, even if you try to come back and remedy those three individual lawmakers who told the truth the first time. “You are not in charge of the outcome, but you are in charge of the effort.” - Brad Thompson, Founder, NC Black Alliance This guiding principle reflects how we work—grounded in strategy, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to OUR community. Our efforts are intentional, reflecting the values and voices of the people we serve. By focusing on meaningful action and consistent engagement, we strengthen our path toward justice and equity. Our state legislature came back into session this week to fast-track HB 10 and expand it beyond its original intent. HB 10 threatens our public schools and immigrant families. In the newly released version, our elected officials added some critical budget allocations but funneled millions of dollars from public schools to private school vouchers. This egregious bill also targets immigrant families and communities by forcing local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration policies. Read post and take action: https://lnkd.in/eq4bZWD2

I love facilitating teams who show up ready to dig into the work of sharpening their vision, shifting their team culture, and clarifying strategic priorities. It’s been a real pleasure working alongside the directors at Advance Carolina as they do this important work. Thanks for the mention Reneé Saddler and for the rare photo of me in action.
Facilitated by Brittany Bennett Weston, the directors team came together for part two of a workshop aimed at elevating our collective performance. We defined our core shared values, established key priorities, discussed strategies to enhance our communication, and strengthened our professional bonds. As the saying goes, 'iron sharpens iron.' This collaborative session has honed our vision and unity as a leadership team. We're excited to see how these insights will drive our organizations forward. #LeadershipDevelopment #TeamBuilding #NonprofitStrategy

In NC, we are facing the most extreme and far right slate of GOP candidates across numerous races on the ballot. So, it was my honor as the Consulting Program Attorney for my client Advance Carolina to stand with other legal experts, advocates, and pro-democracy groups to discuss Judge Jefferson Griffin’s jurisprudence and one of his most extreme legal memos (later withdrawn) that could impact our reproductive freedoms. Jovita Lee, Ed.D, MPA, PgD wasn’t old enough to vote in 2008, when Barack Obama was at the top of the Democratic Party ticket. But she remembers that contest very clearly: It was the last one that her grandmother, who had an eighth-grade education and hailed from a family of sharecroppers, participated in. “She went through segregation and the Civil Rights Movement and had the chance to cast her final ballot for a Black man — that’s an incredible journey,” Lee, the policy director of Advance Carolina, a Black-led grassroots organization, told Capital B. “Then to see her watching the results come in. To see the tears.” Read article: https://lnkd.in/eCWdFDXa

I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to continue my work with the Advance Carolina as the Cumberland County Lead. Our efforts go beyond just the election season; it’s a year-round commitment to our community. As a young voter, it’s inspiring to give back by informing my community about their voting rights, voter laws, and ensuring they are registered and getting to the polls. A special thank you to my Southeast Regional Coordinator, Valencia Handy. She always emphasizes that there is a threat to our democracy, and we are dedicated to doing everything in our power to safeguard it. I want to give a shoutout to our canvassers who are out in the field, knocking on doors, and delivering crucial information to our Black and Brown communities. We want YOU to be a part of this movement! Cumberland County, Hoke County, and surrounding areas, we are eager to partner with you. We are looking to expand our team and need your help and support.
