Congratulations to ATSC Board Member and former CTO of PBS North Carolina, Fred Engel, CPBE, ATSC3, as he announced his retirement last month! Fred joined PBS North Carolina in 2016 and had been instrumental in developing innovative applications for his station’s TV broadcast platform, particularly in the areas of public safety and remote learning. Prior to this role, Fred spent 28 years at WTTW Chicago, where he was vice president of technology, and six years as Kentucky Educational Television’s senior director of technology. Fred plans to continue working in the industry as Principal in Fred Engel Technology Consulting and advocating for NextGen TV. Today is Opening Day of SET Brasil Expo 2024! ATSC and five of our members will showcase the capabilities of the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standards at our exhibit, in Stand 29 of the Distrito Anhembi convention center, throughout the three-day event.   Our ATSC member companies exhibiting include: DigiCAP, ENENSYS Technologies, ETRI and Cleverlogic, Saankhya Labs Pvt. Ltd., and Triveni Digital.   There are a lot of events in our booth today as well!   At 2pm, from the ATSC stage inside our booth, Triveni Digital will be giving a presentation on the benefits of their end-to-end ATSC 3.0 offering for Latin American broadcasters. ATSC member Public Media Venture Group (PMVG) recently announced the ATSC 3.0 launch of W35DZ-D, a low-power station in Cookeville, TN. WCTE Central Tennessee PBS is hosting the transmitter and antenna at their Monterey, TN tower location. W35DZ will broadcast WCTE’s main feed in ATSC 3.0 at 1080p along with additional multicast channels in both HD and standard definition. W35DZ will also function as a testing ground for NextGen TV, exploring features like enhanced emergency alerts, interactive education, and datacasting. PMVG is partnering with another ATSC member, SpectraRep LLC, to run a dedicated datacasting stream for local officials that showcases NextGen’s impact on emergency alerting services. Numerous ATSC members worked together to stand up W35DZ including RAPA (Korea Radio Promotion Association), DigiCAP, project manager Jim Stenberg of Over the Air RF Consulting, and Jeff Winemiller of LOWCOUNTRY 34 MEDIA LLC. Recently, the ATSC Automotive Implementation Team (IT8), presented a webinar “Automotive OTA Software Updates Using the ATSC 3.0 Wireless Network.” IT8 is an ATSC implementation team for the broadcast and automotive industries to collaborate on opportunities to enhance data delivery to vehicles with ATSC 3.0 spectrum. One of the most promising business opportunities to move NextGen Broadcast (ATSC 3.0) Datacasting forward is by becoming a wireless data pipe for the next generation of automobiles. Both industries are progressing towards this goal. This panel brought together key voices from the broadcast and automotive worlds to discuss the current state of play. During the webinar, the Chair of IT8, Mark Barrington, said “The initial scope of work [of IT8] is building membership and participation and industry awareness. We’re raising the profile of what we’re doing. We’re building implementation guides for integration ATSC 3.0 into vehicles and what specs need to be agreed on.” Other experts on the panel included Roger C. Pearl TV, an ATSC member, recently announced that television audiences in 56 U.S. markets have access to coverage of the Paris Olympics in High Dynamic Range (HDR) thanks to broadcasters and NextGen TV. In total, about 73 million U.S. households live in markets where NextGen TV signals are now transmitted with HDR video. The media coverage of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris is reporting a record amount of content and viewers worldwide with more than half the world’s population following the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
